I have one of these jokers as well..... Last Friday he kept asked to sing a song and my reply always is "was it in the book?" when they dont bring me a slip. He would say " how the Hell would I know?" so after he asked about 5 times I finally got him to go look. He comes back to let me know that I dont have it.... "Ok well sorry I dont have it right now but let me see if I can find it later this week." 5 minutes later he comes back "Hey when is it my turn?" I reply "you dont have a song in" he goes back to " I want to sing xxx"
I just wanted to pull my hair out! and as if that was not enough I have a clear etched lit up sign with my logo and name on it so he felt it was his job to keep holding it up and moving it about the table.
So now I'm Pi$$*& I leave my post behind the table take the sign out of his hand place it back on the table and when I turn back around to deal with him his buddy was there so I told him that it would be in his best interest to not approach the table anymore and if he did I would have him escorted out!

There always seems to be 1 bad egg who thinks they are the life of the party when really they are just a pain

You're probably not going to ever please everybody. And there's always going to be a jerk in the crowd. I would venture to say that the fact that he got picked up probably said something about his state of mind at your shows. Your servers or bartenders could shed some light on how much this guy drank before, during, and after your shows.

On the other side of the coin - The host program I use has a scroller that tells who's up and what they are singing as well as the entire line up. It runs on the TV so everyone can see it. You can also set the screen to show the next four singers in between karaoke songs. That won't help the drunk who can't see straight or wants to be moved up in the rotation, but it does keep the crowd informed. I fade to DJ tracks between songs and rarely get through a song introduction before the next singer has mike in hand. If you've got a big rotation or just want to maximize the karaoke experience, this is the best way I know.

Guys like this are not just aggravating you They make the experience bad for everybody. You did the right thing getting rid of him. Just be careful, as he may blame you for getting arrested.

#1 You described him as a BLACK singer ...did it matter ?
#2 I can understand banning singers if they get abusive or nasty not just for being ignorant or stupid. LOL -- If he was drunk ..yeah maybe fllag him for the night ?

So he offered you a bribe ..big deal--just do what you did and turn it down.
The way to handle that is tell him the amount is 10x what he wants to pay and if he pays ---buy the place a round of drinks on him LOL

As far as him calling you names ... That's reason enough to ban him --You should not have to tolerate that from anyone

I noticed that , too, but I thought I'd wait and see if anyone else did.
Really, why would you point that out? Who cares what color he was?
Apparently you do...

It's part of the job. People ask all the time. Which is why I have the computer & they can look and see when they are up. But yes it does get irratating, I would never ban someone for being stupid when repeatidily asked not to, obviously doesn't have something altogether right to begin with.

Have only banned 1 singer, and this was with our previous host, unfortunately, this woman sang worse than all 3 stooges combined, but was convinced herself that she was the 2nd coming of Patsy Cline................................ she would sing and then in between she would heckle and make fun of the other singers................ me being the honest type,. I finally told her she sang like a donkey farts, and if she ever made fun of another singer I'd not only 86 her for Karaoke, I'd 86 her from the bar. Less than 30 minutes later she did, and I did, so for the last 6 months she has to drive 40 miles to get a beer or sing, but her last dui ended that........................... now she sits at home every Friday and Saturday and we all get to sing our worst while having a great time!!! Peace, S.

Mostly my thoughts too. I thought it was going into a name calling incident by you as well, since you first mentioned color. That would've bad. Glad you didn't go that route Gem.

Getting back on track, There's only one I have banned permanently. It because he was yelling and blowing into the mics, despite being told not to. I gave him a couple chances and every time, almost the first thing he did was start yelling and blowing into the mics again! That and he was stage jumping all night. By the end of the night he was trying for almost every song. I was done with him and told the bar owner so but of course this owner is useless and afraid to kick anyone out, especially if they're buying. I know eventually it will come to, "Either he goes or I pack up and go. Your choice." That particular one was so close to the end of the night I didn't push it. Incidentally the doorknob hasn't been back.
But I wouldn't ban someone just for bugging me. I would just tell them flat out and if they continue approach the bar staff to ensure he stayed away from me.

Well for all you people that, I guess never had to deal with it.......many blacks will say you denied them(could apply to anything, not just karaoke), because they are black.....not all blacks, but too many to make you think twice before telling one No....seen it, faced it.....tired of it.........I've even seen the Gay Card played...

The way not care about color ..is not to mention it in 1st place. I'm sure you meant nothing by your description. I'm just busting you ... LOL

Well, it's been pulled by native americans, gays, blacks, and even whites! Pick a race or gender ID, or anything else people discriminate against. What are you trying to say? That because a few blacks will try it, that we need to look out for all of them? If that's the case, then we need to look out for EVERYONE! "Reverse prejudice" happens all the time where I am. It's nothing. People will try whatever they can to get their way and they will use whatever they have at hand, too. Unfortunately for some, it has worked for them in the past, so they continue to try it. I just ignore it and tell them, sorry, but I treat EVERYONE the same, just because you're _____ (fill in the blank) doesn't get you special treatment.
I am well known for showing no preferential treatment to ANYONE. EVER.
I just laugh at them when they try to say I'm prejudiced.
Most people don't know because I look "white", for the most part, that with my heritage, I'm world war 3 and massive race wars all rolled into one! LOL

Well, it's kinda hard to tell w/that pink hair (looking at your profile pic).

All racial discussion aside: Now I remember why I'm not a kj! I am not that good at knowing how to deal w/people when they are being difficult, and I would probably scream and tear my hair out if I had to be subjected to the (#*#@ that you kj's have to go thru' from people (hopefully not from me :D ).

Most times I just laugh at them when they accuse me of something absurd. LOL Then I try ignoring them and as a last resort I approach the bar staff. It's not as common as you think, but it does happen.

I can understand why you had to get rid of that guy. Drugs are a huge problem in my town, and when people mix a lot of alcohol and a lot of pills, it's easy for them to honestly forget what happened 3 minutes ago, and keep asking me repeatedly when they will get to sing next, what their next song is, if they signed up to sing again, if they have time to go to the restroom before their song comes up, etc.

I have more patience than the bartenders, door men, and most bar patrons, though; so these people usually piss someone else off before I have to be "the bad guy." There have been many nights when I was glad some drunk fool finally irritated people enough that the door men called them a cab or got them a safe ride home.

The one thing that really does bother me is when someone gives me that "I've got to go home soon, can I sing within the next few songs," and it's the kind of night where none of the other guests will mind, so I do allow them to sing earlier than their turn, then they come right up to me five minutes later and want to sing another song. wtf? Fool me once, shame on you. Don't try to fool me twice, because you won't be singing anymore tonight.

Just one of the reasons I never, ever move anyone up out of turn. The other reason is, why would you help them to go home early? The idea is for them to STAY and have a few more so that the till rings bigger. The bigger the ringout, the more your job security!

Plus it just make the host look like someone who is playing favorites to specific individual. I used to allow it in the past, but no more. If you have to go in 5 minutes, i'll tell you basically - Hey, I can't get you up any sooner, but will leave your name in the rotation, if you are here still, no prob, if not - no harm no foul. None will get bumped up. If you want to push yourself down the list, that we can accomodate.
