I'm debating what changes I want to make in my format when I make my next song book. A lot of shows in my area are going with first name last name.

I on the other hand have always went with the format

Last Name, First Name like you would see in a record store. Does anybody else still do it that way or am I becoming obsolete?

If you do still do it last name, first name -- how do you handle artists with made up names such as Snoop Dogg?

Dogg, Snoop just looks too much like Dogg Poop to me...

Because of the made up names like you mention, and the band names vs real names, I've opted to just list as first name, last name. Far easier, especially when you're looking for a band that is the person's actual name. Much less hunting if you just have to look up from the first name.

I prefer Last name first. Even though what diafel said makes sense, I still prefer Last first.

I personally prefer last, first as well, but it was too much hassle that way. I get far less people asking me how to find ____ song since I switched.
People have, unfortunately, become rather stupid... They used to teach how to look up thinks such as last name, first... Apparently not anymore.

--did anyone else think of Carrie Underwood when reading the phrase "last name" in this thread?

I don't see what the big deal is. If I'm looking to sing a Bruce Springsteen song, I open up the song book and look under the letter "S". If I don't find what I'm looking for, I look under the letter "B".

If I'm looking to sing a song by the EAGLES, I start looking under the letter "E". If I don't find what I'm looking for, I start looking under the letter "T" for "THE EAGLES".

It's just the alphabet and a little logic thrown in. It AIN'T Rocket Science.

I used to be able to produce John doe from Doe, John using Chip's Karaoke Speedbook.
It was the only songbook program that had that feature.

For anyone who's sober, you are right. How many of those do you have at your shows?

For the songbook, I use last, first. Bands with real names get first last. For duets it's "last, first & first last". The are put on the end.

For any regular DJ music it's first last. Just to be different, I suppose.

My songbook creator will rename the files for you. It has a tool to make the change and then you synch it with the file and it will change the file name to the style you want.

They also have a free program to synch your backup drive's files with your main, like for when you add a bunch of songs and need to get them on both drives quickly and easily.

I don't get a commission for this, but I use the programs and know they work pretty well.

I prefer Last, First and if it is a band then yes it goes First Last. Common sense. I find the books that usually have First Last are usually the ones that also have about 50 pages upfront that are all "New Songs x date" Come on people if you have that many pages of new songs added then just do a new book. I find it really annoying to have to look thru that many to see what you have. Not professional in my book.

Ours used to be last name first but at the last printing we switched to first name first and we took out the "The"s in the band names. It just seemed more natural to look up "Charlie Daniels Band" than "Daniels, Charlie Band, The."

I actually used First nmane Last name from the day I started until my last reprint about 6 months ago where I went to Last name, First name. I only did this because we were getting lots of new singers that did not know how to look up an artist as I still had them alphabatized by last name (Like a library would and not sure but also the way I saw in record stores of years ago). Garth Brooks was found in the B artists.
As far as current, Snoop Dogg would still be listed as Snoop Dogg as it is not his 'real' name and more of a stage/street name. Garth Brooks is now lists as Brooks, Garth. If it's a band name, it's always as it's listed - Led Zeppelin, Molly Hatchet, Lynyrd Skynyrd.

I use First Name Last Name simply because that is the way most people are addressed, except for Bond, James Bond of course.

Most people know singers by their first name and a lot of singers have simply dropped their last name as in Reba McIntire now just goes by Reba and everybody knows who Garth is but if you said Brooks it could confuse them with Brooks & Dunn and so on.

Exactly my method. No matter if you do first name or last name first, some will be confused. I'm not changing mine to make the other half happy. If they don't realize Pink, Lynyrd and Led are not actual names of people, I will let them know.

Always, last name, first name. Also, anything with "The" in the title, like The Beatles, is always: Beatles, The

Thanks for all the responses thus far. While I'm thinking on the topic... Do any of you create a special category for Duets, Musicals, Irish music, Christmas music, etc.?

i do i think its a nice feature and it only cost u a few extra pages anyways so why not

How are you handling doing that Vamp, do you list the same songs more than once? i.e. once by the name and again in say the duet section?
