My latest experience with a new bar was enriching from all standpoints with the exception of the closing of the show.

Every singer we had received an ovation, with very little prodding on my behalf. As far as I could see, every singer had fun. (They all sang again).

The funnest part for me (just being honest) was listening to singers who had enough talent that it made you want to hear them again. I had 6 of these such singers and I made it a point to look each one up and give them a card so they would know where I was playing. None were divas, just people having fun that had decent singing voices. Several were actually shy or low key but were happy I singled them out. I tried not to make it a big deal,,,, didn't want the other singers to be offended.

My question is,,,,,, have any of you made a concentrated effort to have people you know can turn head with their voices, show up at a new gig you were doing? Not just a "hey I'm playing here, come on down" but a "I'd really like to have you show up. Your voice could really turn heads and let people in that place have a great experience hearing a gifted singer. I have no bar gigs scheduled at this time, just a few private parties.

I've developed quite a following doing just that.. and have even in the past picked them up and brought them with me to other shows.

My cell phone has several hundred singers cell phone numbers, and I send them rreminders via text message to let them know when i'll be in their area.. and often get several texts a day from people asking, "Where are you at tonight?"

In my opinion, building a core following comprised of decent singers (or the occasional character) is key to building a solid, full, and entertaining show across multiple venues.

I have a regular following of good to great singers. I can count on a large number of them to regularly show up to any show I give in town. Usuallly I will have at least 20 regulars and sometimes as many as 35 for a show, which means that most singers have a long wait.

I also have a good crowd that is generally not too diva like but generally good singers. I can generally count on the crowd to applaud any good performance very enthusiasticaly without any prompting, and give some applause for effort to every performance. I think it helps having several good to great singers to prevent any one singer's ego from running away and letting them think they are the "only" good singer at the show (and acting like a diva).

I've done the same thing with mailing lists and even call and speak to some singers I've gotten close to over the years. Anytime you can start a new show and bring in some NEW singers faces thats good ..for YOU and for BUSINESS
