Perhaps the most businesslike (sophisticated) method to determine the best strategy/policy for you in that regard would be to check out if your show is attracting greater ATTENDANCE and a larger "Z" tape by accommodating singer's discs (see Cheese's comment reflected in my prior post)

I read this thread and can't help but shake my head in disbelief.

Jam sums up my feeling on the subject nicely..

If you don't like the KJ's selection and equipment etc etc. DON'T GO TO THEIR SHOW plain and simple. If you don't like the menu at a certain restaurant do you keep going back and eventual start to bring your own food ??????

It really doesn't matter though does it? If a kj wants to play a disc or change a mic - great, if they don't - great. I am one that simply doesn't see a problem with either scenerio. But then again, we are a karaoke bar, 7 nights since 92 - people that go in know that is what they are going to get, no regular dance music (dance floor is always open and usually full of dancers from the people singing), the non-singers are usually there either to watch the singers/are with their singing friends all night (dancing as well)/just regulars that would be there anyway/dart players (which many of those people also sing when they can and after games. May be the underlying difference. Most are only running karaoke 'nights' which may or may not attract serious singers (that still spend), people that don't sing or aren't with singers and need something else to keep them interested. Probably why I get singers bringing in their own discs nightly over other kj's that say they have never had a customer bring in their own disc in all the time they have been hosting or very rarely.
Mics - that conversation just got out of hand, in the 19 years i've been working in karaoke, it's only happened like maybe 5 times - one time was with a wireless, but I still don't see a problem with it personally so I will allow it if/when it happens.

The shouting and talking about yourself in the third person in broken English was a bit odd, tho.

Wow...a five page debate on outside mics. That's crazy!

If someone wants to use their own mic at a karaoke show I tell them I don't have the ability even tho it would take me 5 seconds to plug them in. The reason I tell them that is to save them from everyone else at the show thinking they were a big nerd or germaphobe for bringing their own mic.

If you say "I don't care what everyone else thinks" your kidding yourself. You do care what they think otherwise, why would you even be singing at a karaoke show in the first place? You should be singing at home to your 10 cats and 5 dogs (oh yeah and can't forget the iguana). I just have this visual of a dude approaching the KJ with his own mic, with the cord coiled up, strapped to his hip. Makes me laugh and makes me sad at the same time.

The sharing the mic thing gets tossed out as soon as you opened the door to the club unless you open all public doors with your feet or elbows.

Its karaoke and is supposed to be fun. If you are that snooty and particular I don't need you at my show. You probably only drink water and eat the free pretzels anyway.

Even tho these comments were made in 2005, you were still very adamant about not accepting the use of other people's discs at your show (even back then), yet you stated that you've done it yourself.

I really don't want to fault people for how they choose to run their show. No need to be morally outraged about it. But I really do want the singers who like to bring their own discs to please, please, please come to our shows. We'd love to have in some people passionate enough about music to seek out and practice what they love to sing. We'd love to have in some people who want to do a good job singing. We especially appreciate people who love karaoke enough to keep the manufacturers in business by adding to the pool of people who buy discs.

We think you would add to our fun and not detract from it. You don't have to wear the giant cowboy hat if you don't want to. MickyJ can bring his own mic. We accept gifts. But no one can bring their own water. You have to buy something. And no complaints that our lasers are making you dizzy and nauseaous and you can't see to read the songbooks. We have to draw the line somewhere.

Every time I hear one of those jerks opine that I must only drink water and eat free pretzels, I laugh. I know better.

I'd love to come to your show, and will when I am out that way again. We hope to be spending a fall in St. George sometime in the next couple of years. You don't need my mic, but I might bring my Sennheiser 935 just for fun.

BUT OF COURSE, as you proclaimed, you tipped large (doing nothing for the "z" tape) ingratiating yourself with the help who, of course, awaited your return while management was ignorant of the fact that they were supporting your karaoke habit?

"My cheapness"? I buy what's available. And I happen to mostly patronize places that serve food. I arrive early and spend plenty.

Again, I laugh. I know better. I also know that incenting good employees to stay by tipping well is of real economic value. Despite your lack of learning.

I meant the water comment in general as sort of a joke and not directed at MickyJ, just to be clear. I do recall he orders Virgin Marys and food. It was just that we had a person bring her own bottled water the other night so it was on my mind.

I dont thing so just respect the right of others is all ...unlike some of you who dont repect my right not to allow disc

Never had such a request, but I would have no problem switching mics for a patron.

As for giving them a wipe between songs, I think that’s a great idea (necessary or not), and I’d absolutely do that if I were near the stage, but I’m a distance out at the mixer board, as we’re a band that offers karaoke between sets.

While tipping the wait staff is always encouraged and appreciated, it has absolutely no economic value to the VENUE that PAYS FOR THE KJ.

A bars largest profit margin is on drinks, not food. In many cases, a bar/restaurant may even offer some food specials at or below cost (called a 'loss leader') in order to draw patrons to the establishment, in the hopes to make their money on..

You arrive early and spend plenty, that's great. Presumably you spend 'plenty' on food, and i'm sure you tip 20%

Then what happens? You go home? Or you sit and nurse a diet Coke under the impression that the $6.99 cob salad special you had three hours ago outta pay for your seat till the bar closes?

I mean, if our generalizations are so off.. run us through a typical karaoke night for you, hour by hour, with what you might typically purchase, and what you spend.

What's a good tip for a $2 coke, anyway? 20%?

I would imagine it's the same as it would be for a $2 draft beer.
Why do people assume because it's pop that it's less money?
Beer here is generally around $2 a glass. Pop is usually MORE, $2.50 or so.
Pop drinkers DO spend, just like the draft beer drinkers.
