I suspect what determines whether somebody purchases another beer or pop is whether they think they will have another opportunity to sing. If the glass is empty and one knows they will be up again, even if it's an hour away, they will probably get a refill.

What about smoke machines. Has anyone brought their own smoke machine yet?

Something was said about profit margin of soda vs beer. THAT'S what I stuck to, and now you want to throw in a whole range of other factors such as food, etc. What if the bar is a BAR? No food available. I stuck to the example used without twisting it to suit some need I might have to try and make you look incompetent. I'm sure you're capable of handling that all by yourself! I would appreciate if you showed me the same courtesy.
BTW, I also used to run a bar, just for your information. I'm not totally ignorant of what goes on and how to run it successfully, you know. I am well aware of the ins and outs of it. Been there, done that. Theories are great for textbooks, but I live in the real world.

Who was arguing that karaoke should go dry, anyway? Isn't there a place for all kinds?

I drank plenty in my time. In fact, I was one of those who bartenders love to see come in. But I can't do that any more. Too bad, so sad. Now the bar owners that made money hand over fist by my business now have to try and make do with me when I don't drink. I know two bar owners well, and they don't have a problem with non-drinkers. One gives away coffee and soft drinks -- except during entertainment.

Believe me, I have no interest in crowding out a bunch of drunks. When it gets that time where they are swinging from the chandeliers, I'm outta there. I come early, and I eat. I usually order from the top of the menu. I tip well. Not because I feel I owe it to the bar -- its because I want karaoke to stick around. Sheer self-interest.

I like the person -- maybe Gryf -- who said that they have three crowds. The As come early, the Bs filter in, and the Cs finish it out. I am gone by the time the Cs are there. When I was doing shows in bars, that's pretty much what my experience was.

Hmmm.
Would you be refering to my Magnum 1200
or my Titan 510...

Edit. It's a 510 not a 501.

Generally speaking, no one plugs ANY unfamiliar equipment into mine- the exception is when I occasionally provide sound and music for a one man singer's show. Then a mic only, if requested- though it never has been. I kind of cover the mic gamut in brands...

While no instrument will be plugged in at a karaoke show, I have allowed the occasional harmonica, jaw harp, and even a dirty sax. I try to discourage it because I don't see it as karaoke.

I would actually prefer to do sound and lighting for a live band
than do karaoke.

Bring the 510s and pass them out to everyone! But then I suppose I would start getting offended because the roast beef and sour apple vapors weren't a good mix.

Diafel: At the risk of repeating your post here is what YOU asked!
Around here, they charge for EVERY drink, regardless of whether it's pop or alcohol.
And tovmod, Not sure why you would need to know how many beers are being purchased per day vs soft drinks. The profit margin remains the same, regardless of how many are sold wrote:
.

So, if you don't want to understand the matter why did you bother to ask? I understand from you unrealistic view of the "real world" why you are confused --- but your "real world" is quite different from the one I live in as a CPA when discussing financial matters

Try this; it's actually quite simple. If you focus on the profit margin of one product, without regard to how many units of that product are actually sold, or not, what have you determined? --- NOTHING!.

Profit margin is an irrelevant number when it is devoid of any discussion of how much the margin from a product contributes to total profits. And that contribution is what some of the more savy posters were concerned with when they entered into the "profit margin" discussion!

How about this?

In my restaurant I offer great fillet mignon - wonderful
It's the best fillet in town - fabulous
It provides my greatest profit margin (in dollars) - outstanding

SO HOW MANY FILLETS DO YOU SELL A WEEK?
None: No one can afford them!

I have to THEREFORE rely, INSTEAD, upon bottled water sales which provides an even greater profit margin (in percentages) per bottle than the fillets
HOWEVER monthly bottle water sales of 2000 units can't come close to even meeting my rent.

Funny, that this discussion came up. Last night I had a show, and SIX strippers came in, and were passing out deep fried Mozzarella Sticks at $3.00 a pop. There was one guy at the bar (karaoke singer) sipping on his water, that must have bought 15 from the girls. Then the girls (they might have been drunk girls) pulled out their OWN sm58's, and asked if they could use them, I said "anything to please". I had to draw the line, when one of them wanted to bring her own "stripper pole" and sing upside down, (liability issue) as she might have got the mic caught in her throat while upside down. They kept asking to be BUMPED up in the rotation, but me, the constant professional, I stuck to my guns, and said "no preferential treatment, no matter how few clothes you have on. Anyhow, they made the rounds, gave a few lap dances, and all-in-all, it was a really good night of karaoke. Not too many good singers, but I'll bet the (ZZZZ TAPE) was pretty big at the end of the night. LMAO

see in a case like that ..when something UNUSUAL happens ..
arrival of 6 strippers
large unexpected parties
Celebrity in audience
I'll bend the rules as far as STRICT rotation if I feel it would be BEST for the venue overall. -- Things like that keep people in their seats spending money.
So if you have to BUMP them up a little.

Again it would be for unusual "special" circumstances

6 strippers would have gone straight to the top of my rotation.

It's simply what the customers would want.

Sounds like a typical night for one of my shows.. except the guy sipping water storms out of the place when he gets bumped one song.. and the strippers are pulling out everything BUT sm58's.

They like to sing stuff like 20 Fingers 'Short Dick Man'.. which runs out the remainder of the 'serious' karaoke singers/professional water sippers.

I was at a hotel tiki bar in Florida once when a woman sang SHORT DICK MAN. Three tables full of retirees paid their tabs and left because of it. Told the bar manager why they were leaving and told the bar manager that they would never return to that hotel again and that they would find another Golf Resort to patronize in the future. Bar manager immediately told the KJ to NEVER allow that song or any other song like it to be sung. Some people just love to sing songs to make others feel uncomfortable. I'll never understand it myself. Maybe if they had karaoke in an adult X-Rated establishment but not in a family environment.

It's a good example of why each show and KJ is unique. The venues clientele along with the atmosphere the OWNER is attempting to achieve play an important role in the type of karaoke show a kj will offer.

One size does NOT fit all when it comes to karaoke
