This is a good example of why you should always work that out with the management BEFORE it gets you into trouble. I always ask a new venue on day one how they feel about profanity/questionable lyrics, etc. 9 times out of 10 they don't care, but if it comes up later at least my a$$ is covered.

Perhaps your parenting style differs from mine, but i'd hardly call a smokey bar at 10pm or later a place i'd bring my kids, or any kind of 'family environment'.

In fact, many states have laws that prohibit persons under the age of 18 from being in a bar after a certain time, precisely because they're NOT 'family environments'.

I sang a song that was on Bob & Tom once.. 'Blow Me' followed by 'Prison (@$%&#!)'.. both songs that were played on FM radio in the morning.

I got a big kick out of the three soda sippers who were offended and walked out about a minute into 'Prison (@$%&#!)'.

"Brought back too many memories, eh?", I barked in the microphone as they walked for the door.

The one guy turned around, gave me the finger, and shouted "F*ck you!".. and the room exploded in laughter.

That's how *I* roll.

You want a 'family environment', go talk your church or local Chuck E. Cheese to put on a karaoke show.

A bar at 10pm or later isn't a family environment. It's a BAR.

Some bars still prohibit that kind of behavior. Ours do not even allow cussing over the mics (or excessively at the tables), if you do you are warned, do it again - cut off, if you do it again, you are 86'd for the night.

I never thought of a bar as a place to go to try to offend people on purpose. I guess I just don't roll that way. I was brought up to not be rude and crude in mixed company. Hundreds of thousands of karaoke songs to pick from and you have to pick the ones that will chase customers out the door. We have a guy around here with the same mentality at one of the local karaoke bars. His friends think that it's funny but just about everyone doesn't find it humorous at all. Just a little boy trying to get some attention.

It's not a place to offend people on purpose.. but it is a place full of adults.. and not a place to tip toe around some peoples tender feelings.

As mentioned, there are plenty of places that prohibit such behavior.

Management has the right to set the atmosphere and decorum of their establishment, and customers have the right to either stay or leave.

Reminds me of a time I was in a band years ago.. a woman at a table complained that I had a cigarette hanging out of my mouth while I was on stage.

Don't get me wrong.. i've played in restaurant/bar environments where I definitely censor my show early in the evening while the restaurant customers finish their meals, and won't play some of the more risqué material until later in the evening.

I enjoy the irony of all these silver and blue hairs singing about marital infidelity, sex with underage girls, etc and then get a bee in their bonnet when someone says the occasional 'F' word or sings a silly song like 'Short Dick Man'.

Makes me wonder if it was the subject matter itself that bothered them, or perhaps it just made them a little too self conscious.

Nope, Tacoma, WA. Anything with cussing in it is not even listed in the books anymore.
Reason this even became was when I started hosting there in 92, we allowed everything (back then there wasn't a whole lot of cussing in karaoke songs anyway). When SC & others started doing more songs with swearing was when our crowds started getting more rowdy (with a large group sharing maybe 1 or 2 pitchers of beer) with the instigators singing (screaming) the F Bomb songs and we'd usually end up with some kind of altercation or two by the end of the night. Come about 94-95, the managament & owner got fed up with that (as did many customers). They did not want the rowdy crowd. So they instructed me not to allow any song with swearing or blantant profanity to be done. I argued with them & if I wanted to keep my job shut myself up (7 nights at a great rate - I went with the money). Well we did eventually lose the rowdy crowd but gained a better singing crowd that actually spent more throughout the night so I quit arguing. So I now screen all music before it goes in the books and if it has any cussing, it does not go in at all, no cussing over the mic period, you will be warned and if it happens again, cut off. Our crowds are by no means prudes, 20-30 is the average age, but they understand the rule & comply because they like the rest of the elements of the show. On occasion I will allow a song if I know the singer will censor themself - unless it's something like Aenima - Tool or She Hates Me - Puddle Of Mudd for example.
If you absolutely have to sing a cuss song, I have a couple bars close by that you can go & do just that.

There is a time and place for everything. In a hotel bar or restaurant where there are many couples and some of the senior sect; I choose to sings songs that wouldn't offend my mother or grandmother if they were in the audience. If I were to find myself in a bar where every other song being sung was of a vulgar nature, maybe I'd fall in line with the rest of the crowd and join in with some more adult material. For the most part, I try to be polite when I'm out for some singing. I think that I get more pleasure out of singing a "NICE" song than singing an adult song. I've paid good money to see Andrew Dice Clay in person so I wouldn't consider myself a prude by any stretch of the imagination. I just think that the average karaoke venue is NOT the appropriate place for such language. To each his or her own.

In regard to the joke.......Why is 88 better than 69????
