To the statement, that we all think we're right I would like to say something... I talk to all my regulars every now and then and always ask them to give me an honest feedback of my show. I do that ever since I started 8 years ago simply for the reason that I know I am NOT perfect. And I do appreciate any kind of feedback, positive or negative, because I see it as a chance to improve when I do something others don't like. I even tell them, if there is something they want me to know but want to stay anonymous they can do so over the contact form of my website by using fake names and email addresses.

Do I always get an honest feedback? I'm sure, I don't. But at least every once in a while I get things pointed out to me that I gladly work on. I know, I can't make everybody happy, but I can come pretty close that way.

Being perfect I don't have the same problems you mortals do.
I do not have loads of money because I donate most of it to charity.
I expect to get my sainthood later this year.

What...

What...

Oh yeah...

Nearly forgot...

Charity is the name of the bar I drink at.
:D :D :D

Was this an invite to attack the entire group? Stick to the story.

There was nothing wrong with what the poster did. Keep in mind, it wasn't a conventional " I don't him/her, he/she doesn't know me. She was rude and assuming the story has all the facts, it was handled professionally. If that is the type of attitude she will be using, she won't last long>

I happen to agree with what Bruce said, and I don't see it as attacking the group. It's a good observation. We are ALL guilty of it at one point or another. Ease up.
BTW what on earth is going on? I've agreed with Bruce again!
OK. Who are you and what have you done with Bruce??? ;)

I'm not gonna ease up. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. Now I sound like the girl in the story eh?

It's a horrible observation and makes generalizations about KJ's that's unfair.
#1) KJ'ing is a business and however the KJ's chooses to run it makes it RIGHT
#2) KJ's use equipment they can afford and are happy with -never the believing there is no BETTER out there. There is not a KJ in business that could not upgrade their equipment. The question is always WHY? why spend $1000 when $200 wll do ?
#3) Of course Kj's hate being told they SHOULD have a cdg player as much as singers hate to be told they SHOULD sing something from the book. lol

This NEWBIE KJ is of course not experianced enough and will have to find out for herself the mistakes she is making. She'll also learn about the whiney singers who wander from show to show like misplaced gypsies looking for a home. It's all part of the game 8) 8) 8)

Did you just call Bruce a Gypsy?

Beautifully put. I ask for feedback, I listen. I like the good stuff but the bad stuff is opportunities to improve. I've yet to get peeved at someone who gives me feedback that doesn't paint a Mona Lisa. Plus I want then to come back and bring others with them to my shows.

Sometimes the whiney wandering singer will serendipitiously end up meeting the meandering mistakin' kj at the new bar for both of them one block down the street (The Kafe Kismet). Both stare at each other in surprise. When this happens, one of the following songs should be sung.

1. The Pina Colada Song
2. We Are the World

Thanks for all the thoughts on this. I have helped her in the past wring out her equipment and she has asked me for advice in the past.

So, Yes, I did overstep and offer advice where no was asked. That's a fair assessment and I apprecaite ya'll laying it out for me like that. Somthing to ponder in the future.

Thank you all and I'll let you know how the show goes in the future <salute>

It may be as simple as this: "Are you interested in feedback?" If not, then stop. If the response is in the affirmative, then suggest away. Asking your singers frequently for feedback is always a good thing - at times they may make a suggestion which may give you an opportunity to explain something that we as KJs are aware of, but the singers may not be aware of.

I think an anonymous survey is a great idea occasionally - and when they turn in their response, they get to sing a two-fer. I wish I could put my hand on the one I used last time - I gleaned a lot from them as far as things that would help the venue mostly...but the venue has to be open to suggestions.

Let's face it. KJ's don't last long without attracting singers to sing at their shows. Can I sing something out of the KJ's book? Sure I can but if I just bought a new CD+G disc with some new songs on it that I really want to sing; I'll find myself a karaoke show that allows me to sing what I REALLY want to sing instead of something that thet the KJ just happens to have. Pocket Songs came out with a Springsteen disc a few years back that didn't have graphics for any of the songs AT ALL. I spent hours making the graphics files for the songs and then burnt them to a disc. Why should I patronize a show where I can't get the opportunity to sing those songs? Should I be limited by the KJ's selection of the same 3 Springsteen songs. I don't expect any KJ to have every song that I would like to sing but it sure would be nice if the KJ is nice enough to provide a way for me to sing my FAVORITE songs. I don't see how hooking up an extra piece of equipment, or buying one more program(Siglos) is such a big deal for a person who is making a living in the karaoke business.

Funny how you make up numbers to make your point. Everyone that has exactly 3 karaoke songs by the Boss, say ahhhhhh.

And I don't see why it's such a big deal to you. I like my set up the way it is. Small, compact. 2' by 3' footprint. No more room in my rack, my rack is high enough already. I've had one request and he didn't make a fuss about it at all and he had a great time and sang at least 5 songs out of my book. He never even hinted or suggested that he was disappointed or that I should get a player.

To each his own. I don't grade my skills on what you think. I grade my skills on the feedback I get from the people who hire me and the people who attend my shows. Not one thing you tried to pin on all KJ's has been brought up to me by these folks so I'm doing ok.

Now if you want to buy me a player, rebuild my rack, perhaps I will use a player. Until then, I'm very happy with my entire set up. All I want to do is continue to build my song library (over 10,000 now) and at some point get a new wireless mic set up.

Having said that, I'm still fairly new in the business, I've had suggestions given to me by customers and a couple DJs. Some I've taken and used (and learned) and some I didn't act upon. I don't take the suggestions or "constructive criticism" in a negative way. I figure out of 100 ideas, at least one could help me.

Well it may be true where he goes. From what i've heard from people that request Springsteen is that not many have anything either. I didn't have too many until a couple years ago, but by request, now have 38 titles.

Even if I carried an outside player, I would not be able to play your burnt disc as I am a member of poop and their bylaws say no burnt discs from the outside. rather than get into the argument of why can you play his disc and not mine I don't play discs at all. I'll be glad to get the music if you want me too by the next week or so, depending on when I get the disc. I am still waiting on a disc I bought on ebay on August 3. It is on "Back Order" although I don't understand anything from an ebay seller being on back order.

This should not be! Ebay sellers are REQUIRED to send you your item within a reasonable time frame. Items that are on "back order" should not even be listed. It's against eBay rules. If you've paid by PayPal, you only have a certain amount of time (3 weeks, I think) to file a claim if you don't get your item. I would be filing IMMEDIATELY. Otherwise, when the time expires, the seller can keep your money and never send the disc and you have no recourse. Purchase from someone else or ask then seller when he will have it in stock and purchase it at that time, but get a refund NOW!

This is correct, one of the terms of posting any item on Ebay is that it must be a real on-hand item. Purchasing something that they then claim is out of stock is a violation of Ebay's terms of service. I'd be filing a complaint, asking for a refund and leaving negative feedback at this point.

Issue is resolved. They refunded my money. After I left negative feedback complaining about the back order.

With that attitude, she deserves to lose her show, agreed.

You did nothing wrong. She asked for your advice, and you gave it to her. If she chooses not to take your advice, that's her problem. You still sang and had a good time so it's no loss to you.

I would do the same. If a new KJ asks me for advice, I'll gladly give them tips. If they're curious as to how my equipment is run, I'll give them a run-down. I try not to give advice though unless asked, as I find that insulting when I'm the advisee in that situation.
