I'm looking for some suggestions for a small rack. All I'm going to put in it is my Behringer 4400 compressor, RSC 333 cdg player, and then I'd like to have a place on top to set my Mackie Profx12 mixer. I could leave the compressor and player in the rack, then when I set up, I could put the mixer right up top and hook them into it. Looking for something light weight, and fairly inexpensive. I've seen plenty on the net, but would like some "first hand" knowledge opinions.

I swear by Gator cases. Lightweight, VERY durable, and very competitively priced compared to other ABS plastic cases. I've owned several, and have even been able to resale my old ones for 60-70% retail. They also have great customer service and are made locally in the Tampa Bay area where I live, though they are certainly a national company.

I recently purchased a SKB Roto Rack that's pretty light weight (24 lbs) for a 10U over 4U case.

I mounted my Mackie 1202 VLZ3, dual CD controls and Alesis Microverb on top. Underneath I have my Furman power conditioner, digital key changer and cd trays.

I really like the lid as it's flat on top and allows me to easily stack stuff on top when transporting.

It doesn't come with the retractable 8U shelf but would be perfect for pc if you were digital.

EWI cases are not as light-weight as Gator/SKU plastic stuff, but they are quite durable and look professional. I can see how you might want a plastic one for better portability; but I thought I would suggest this as another option for you.

The one Gator case I own has cheap hardware and I managed to break the slant-top part after only a few months of normal use. I won't be buying any more Gator products.

I don't believe the ProFX12 has rack ears available and from your description it doesn't sound like you're looking to rack mount the mixer so something like this one from SKB should work perfect for you. Mount any outboard equipment in the vertical rack, leave cables connected and inside and when you open up at a gig, put the mixer on top, connect your cables and you're off and running. The SKB's are nice durable racks, far more sturdy than the Gators.

Here's a pic of SKB I bought for $149 plus $19 in shipping. It doesn't come with the shelf but it is available for an additional $49. I may buy the shelf if/when I decide to go digital and keep the cdg players for those who bring their own discs.

I've been looking at alot of "small racks" all day (yeah right). I like both of the SKB cases suggested, but wish there was one like Hitech showed, with the top like the one Letitrip showed. The only reason the SKB mini isn't perfect is the weight. That's why I like the Roto Rack, only 24 pounds, as apposed to 40 something on the mini. That's with nothing in it. Does anyone know if there is like just a flat shelf that would screw into the Roto Rack that would give it a flat top like the Mini rack, or is this something I would have to make.

That looks to be very similar to the one pictured on the rack I mentioned but larger. That one (SKB AV14) is $114 and is 25" x 20"

I'm not sure if the AV14 will work with the RotoRack lid or not, but might.

Lonman, I saw that shelf, supposed to be for laptop use. What I'd like is to just have a flat metal sheet that I could screw to the top rack of the roto Rack, and then just sit my mixer on top when I set up, as my mixer is not rack mountable. As I said, that way it would look just like the one Letitrip suggested.

If you're just wanting a flat surface you could probably get a piece small guage sheet metal and drill the appropriate holes to mount or they make rack blanks that might work as well http://www.rackmountsolutions.net/Rackmount_Filler_Panels_Brackets.asp#BLANK%20FILLER%20PANELS

Yeah a couple of filler panels or hell you could just get a sheet of 1/4" plywood, paint it black, cut it to the right dimensions, drill and and mount it to a regular slant top. Then you'd even have the ability to customize it further with cable grommets, retractable plugs, etc.

I took off the plastic things on the side and made up 4 L-brackets for mounting. Works great. This way I don't have to move the mixer around, have a second box for it, etc. It stays mounted and the rack top fits fine.

Here's my fix for this. I've since add a small DJ mixer that hangs off the front.[/img]
