I never seem to come back to shows that use germ collectors, which is what I call those foam windscreens. Not only do they affect the sound, they are plain unsanitary.

Look out! I'm about to agree with you!

Those colorful foam windscreens seem to muffle the sound.. and I can't imagine they do anything but absorb all the spit.

I guess that keeps it off the mic.. but the next guy (or gal) who comes up to sing that presses their lips up to the foam is going to experience the 'sponge squeeze' effect.

Yuck.

Yes, there's a sliver of foam on the inside of the ball.. and that probably should be changed regularly, too.. or at least rinsed out and left to dry before being put back in.

I don't have a show tonight.. might have to do that tonight.

Nice thing about SM58s is that with cheap $5.00 screens, you can just change them out and take them home to wash them. I have about 5 extra ones at the moment, and I change them out wash them fairly regularly. I probably should do it every show, but I think I get it about every 3-4 shows.

I think it adds a lot to the feel of the show to have a fresh and new-looking mic, which is why I replace dented screens as well. At $5.00 a pop, it is a cheap way to look top-class.
