I just wanted to get some other opinions on what you think are the best songs to play between singers. I'm not talking genre, or anything like that. I'm talking about specific fun, catchy, memorable, even novelty songs that you just love playing. I got the idea for this thread from Bazza's thread about Cee Lo Green's song. It's an awesome song that I may never have heard about that's sure to become a hit at one of my venues. A couple of my favorites are "Fight for your right to party", "Sittin' at a bar", and "Crazy (@$%&#!)."

Here are a few I use that I can think of off the top of my head:

Cotton Eyed Joe (The Rednex version)
Jump Around
Here for the Party
Single Ladies (Gawd I hate that song)
Cupid Shuffle
Low
Miss New Booty
I Like to Move It

I like the ones above because for the most part you can cue the song at any point and fade it out at any point and people immediately recognize it and start bopping to it.

I generally go with intrumentals. People tend to have problems thinking of songs to sing while other songs play in their head.... Not a hard and fast rule, it depends on the crowd as well.

Depends on your crowd, but I like to play dance music. Sometimes a song goes over so well that people will ask me to keep it on so they can dance to it. Gotta keep the energy up.

how do you not get stopped durring each one of those with "play it all the way, we wanna dance" from the 3 drunk teeny boppers? anytime someone even SAYS cupid shuffle i get swamped. just my own curiosity how you control it.

i use guitar instrumentals, summer song, clifs of dover, ice 9, satch boogie. upbeat, energetic, but not quite danceable. i only let them play for 5-10 seconds or so between singers.

Hmm, maybe everyone elses venues are more established than mine. Sometimes I have time to play a full song between singers no problem. We do have nights where the singers are back to back nonstop, but not all the time. I make it a point to at least play 2 line dance songs i.e. cupid shuffle, maybe more in a night. Dancing has always been a part of my show so I just feel out the crowd and go with what's working. Sometimes I piss off the dancers, sometimes the singers, but most of the time I think everyone is pretty content and understands how I do things.

I think it was inspired by Gallegher's comedy routine where he comes in on a tricycle singing a funny song.

Sometimes if I have the time and I see that people are dancing, I will let it play all the way through. However, more often I don't have the time and I just bring up the next singer. If someone complains I just remind them that it is Karaoke night and suggest to them that they could sing it on Karaoke if they want to hear the whole thing (Another reason why I make sure I have Karaoke versions of my "house music" tracks). Most of the time they decline but a few times I've gotten people who otherwise didn't want to sing to bring up a group to sing a song that they wanted to dance to.
