Just yankin' your chain M, and waiting for the reaction when the word "panties" appeared in a post...never takes long, does it?

Things that would help kill the some of the bar industry here (as they have in the UK).
Overpriced drinks at the bar vs extremely discounted drinks at the supermarket.
Non smoking in public areas
Aggressive targeting of drunk drivers and then issuing public intoxication tickets to people who are sensible enough to walk.
My understanding is that the local country pubs in England have declined for those reasons, not so sure about in town / city night spots. Another thing that kills it is higher enforcement of drinking age, now kids grow up getting their drink from the supermarket and are drinking underage in parks or more likely in houses and grow accustomed to that instead of getting that 'supervised' underage drink at their local from 15.
When in California I would always take a bus to the bar and get a taxi home, even here in Austin I'd do the same. Being a non smoker I love non-smoking bars and the fact that you don't stink when you come home.
The bars I work karaoke at are all out of Austin, smoking bars where the catchment area is somewhat wide so carpooling / designated driver is hard for a lot of people. Nearly everyone smokes (working class demographic) too.
The future? I think bars will become non smoking and lose some business but you have to give the punter something they can't get at home.

Sometimes I think it is the insistance on keeping everything the same. The bar owner knows how to serve the old time clientele and longs for the good old days with bands playing until 4 a.m. and everyone hanging out and the police taking you home if you got drunk. They fight the smoking thing because they know they will lose some of those people.
But they are losing them anyway. They die off and a new generation may have different needs. The custom brew pubs with pseudo health food selections and gourmet appetizers are packed with young people. They are usually snowboarder/moutain biker types who don't smoke and prefer not to be in it. These places get known for their music, also. But the old time bars aren't going to integrate any of that in as they fear alienating their oldtimers. So they decline and complain and blame.
Where we are, I've gone six years without being able to get a dark beer. They laughed the first time I came in and asked for one.
I have a friend in the same area who cleans up on techno DJ Rave stuff. His shows are packed. It isn't my type thing but sometimes I wonder if the bars don't lose the young people because the bars want to stay stuck in time and once the oldtimers are gone, there is no one to take their place.

It's all in your mind.
We have a 90 year old guy that comes in and never walks out on any kind of music--as long as there are females on the dance floor. We had a young guy in full cowboy uniform tell us he would walk out if anyone did Y.M.C.A. I let that guy walk.
Guess I should amend that from "oldtimers" to people who want things always to remain exactly the same and don't welcome new blood, etc.
You are younger than me, anyway.

It is appearing that no one on here knows the future. Or else they are afraid to tell us.
They know alot about panties, though.
