I'm ready to have my song books reprinted and am curious what format most of you use, single or double columns. Double columns will save paper but give the appearance of a thinner song book. While single columns will make the book fatter.
As you know the public mentallity is, bigger is better. The thicker book appears to have alot more songs then the double column book, although they would both have the same number of songs. So...which way should I go?

Why couldn't you just answer the question without making a stupid remark?

I use double columns in my books and print them two sided. I'm not interested in having "big books" to make it look like I have a bunch of songs. People figure out what I've got fast enough, I'd much rather have lighter books that are less likely to fall apart and cost less to print.

Does this mean the book will now look bigger?

This whole topic seems ridiculous. You have what you have. I've yet to see anyone leave a show just because the book "looks thin". Save some money and time, do double columns, and call it a day. It's not about how many songs you have, but WHAT you have (and how you run your show).

Basically if the comment is something like this: "wow! you have everything I ever wanted to sing!" then you've got a thick enough book.

I do all of my books with the single column just to make it easier to follow. I also build each book with 2 listings. Listed by Artist in the front and by Title in the back. I don't do this to make my books look thick I do this cause every time I go to a show you see people hogging 2 books so that they can have it both ways. I also have on the first Page of the book the newest songs added. This allows me to quickly update a book when I add a few songs without reprinting $200 worth of books each time. Then when I have a couple pages of new stuff in the front I reprint that books.
Every one seems to like the way they are set up.

I would say single column, and make the print as large as you can. Bars tend to turn down the lights before karaoke starts, and reading can be very difficult, especially for people like me who have to put on reading glasses for small type. Most of us who have been doing this for a while will bring a flashlight, but not everyone has one. Also, if someone misreads the number, it wastes time and possibly causes dead air while you search for the correct number.

Our books are single column, big print for exactly the reasons stated by Denise. We have a dim bar and (not that Denise is) an older clientele. We also only have 50000 songs at this point so the books aren't too thick.
Every now and then I stick some Dollar Store flashlights in the pen pockets but people haven't caught on to using them. I've only lost a few which surprised me.

For most of us it all comes down to $$$$$ if you can afford single columns with large print then go for it.

Double column. Separate artist & title books. When I used to put the artist and title in the same book - I admit this is my preference as a singer as well, but when the books themselves had got to the point of needing to be in a 3" binder a few years back, it's too much. But this was also when I was doing single column. If I were to resume the artist/title combo in my dual column format today, the books would be almost 4". This is only with 12K songs.
