If you want your books to look bigger I'd put "by artist" and "by title" in the same book. Then if it still isn't as thick as you'd like it go single column.

If you're going by what patrons like this is also the best way. They like big print, so they can see the numbers without glasses and they like by title and by artist in the same book.

Another way to make your books look larger is to put plastic sleeves on each page and print on one side only.

I don't do any of this because I'm trying to keep my books smaller.

Don't worry about perception, that is only what "they" want you to believe. I have been using double columns for ever but now I am going to go with single and larger font so maybe more of my singers can actually see the print in the dimly lit venues (as others have also commented on) I play in. Hopefully this will reduce some of the song number mistakes I seem to get cause the just can't see the print. (If I had a dime for everytime I had someone say "I don't have my glasses.......) I use the format of several sections "Artist" "Title" "Recently Added Songs" and my books are plenty thick. Going single column will increse my printing cost all the way around, more paper, liners amd wider notebooks but it has to happen. I am headed to the 3" binder soon myself.

If you are just doing it to make your library look bigger, you are just chasing a perception that you will never beat. There will always be someone with a larger library but as long as you have a good selection and add songs as the "regular" singers request them you will do fine.

Print on!!!!!!

Our books are single column, big print for exactly the reasons stated by Denise. We have a dim bar and (not that Denise is) an older clientele. We also only have 50000 songs at this point so the books aren't too thick.

Every now and then I stick some Dollar Store flashlights in the pen pockets but people haven't caught on to using them. I've only lost a few which surprised me.

ONLY HAVE 50,000 songs? LOL. 5000?

Good catch, Karen. Yes. 5,000. We've only been at it two years.

Oh well. I guess I will be expecting a "letter" for that typo.

I think the singers are not going to be fooled by the thickness of the book.

If you have a lot of songs there is very good reasons to go double collums, not only is it going to cost less, but after some point binders get TOO thick to be handy.

If you are going with 2 sheets in a sheet protector 300 pages is going to be an upper limit in a 3" binder. Without sheet protectors you can go a lot more, but the binders will not last then and need a lot of replacements. Even with heavy duty binders they tend to break around that point. You may be able to go a bit more than 300 pages but that causes the binder to break faster. With 2" binders the limit is about 200 pages.

So with 1 collumn that makes the upper limit about 15,000 songs in a 3" binder and 2 collums it will be 30,000.

Yes you can go smaller fonts (bad idea in a dimly lit bar). And 50,000 song binders are POSSIBLE but I dont think many people have seen one.

Overall I like my binders to be as lightweight as possible while still showing all my songs, therefore I go two collumns.

I do it somewhat of a compromise however I list the songs and artists In the same collum, the artists are listed only once (in bold). The song titles are indented about 1/2". For the title sorted binder it is a lot heavier because of the additonal space needed.

Thanks, Rumbolt! I'm glad it wasn't the letter "P."
