I bought a Herald M-102 (pill style) microphone. It has a permanently attached cord. At the end it has an Amphenol connector that I got an adapter for to make it 1/4 in. TS (only has 1 ring). I hooked it up, and IT WORKS. My problem is that the cord is only about 6' long. I want to hook a 25' cable to it, and I found an adapter at Musicians Friend 1/4 female to male xlr made by (Planet Waves). Most of these I've seen are by Hosa, and they say for TRS to XLR. Will this adapter work for me hooking it to the 1/4 in TS then to a regular mic cable? I don't want to mess with the original cord, would like to keep this as original as possible (it's in mint condition). Any input will help.

Get a 1/4" to XLR transformer like this one: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index ... Id=2062444

That will allow you to convert the unbalanced 1/4" to a balanced XLR, giving you both isolation and the noise cancelling benefits of XLR. Just using a 1/4" to XLR cable will not do either, it will simply give you a "one-legged" XLR which is not what you'll want.

Ok, from what I know you should be able to use a 1/4" to XLR adapter to extend the cable run.

BUT

Since you've created an unbalanced connection by using the initial TS adapter you're probably going to have line noise and hum issues with any cable run longer than 15'

Is the original cable balanced or unbalanced

The original cord is called an Amphenol connection. It is a screw on connection with a "spot" in the middle of the connection. The ONLY adapter that I could find available was the TS. I am assuming that's because it is unbalanced. Right now I can hook it up with no noise. but as I said, the cord is only 6' long. I would like to have a longer cord on it. Couldn't figure out how to connect it to a cord with a TS end going into the mixer, so I figured I'd hook it to a regular cord with the xlr end. Unless they make a cord that has a 1/4 female to a 1/4 male TS. Is there such a thing, and would it be better than using the transformer adapter?

No it wouldn't be better. Again, use the TS adapter you'be already got and then into the transformer I recommended. Unfortunately I haven't seen and MC2M to XLR transformer anywhere so you'd have to do the double adapter thing. But still far better than going unbalanced all the way (which is what a 1/4" to XLR cord would do).

Thanks Letitrip, I went to Radio Shack and got the transformer adapter. I'll update once I have everything hooked up.

Totally out of curiosity, what are you planning to do with that mic? I'm assuming you're not planning to put it on stage for your karaoke singers ;) Those Heralds were among a group of really popular broadcast mics and I know guys that still use similar mics for some voiceover work. Just curious what your application is.

Planning on using it as MY mic at my show. I'm currently using the Elvis style mic. It makes for a good point of interest at the show. I MIGHT let someone use it on occasion, but it would have to be someone I can trust, I'm not just going to put it on the stand and let everybody have at it. I'm really interested in seeing how this thing sounds when it's hooked up to my system. I think it should sound ok. This mic is in Pristine condition. If you saw it, you'd think it was a NEW mic right out of the box. I hooked it up to my little Memorex all-in-one just to make sure it works, which it does work. Going to set up my stuff today, and hook it up. I'll know by tonight how it sounds.

LOL awesome, you'll look like David Letterman or something!! Just be careful with it, obviously while more durable than the ribbon mic it was meant to imitate (i.e. the RCA type 77), the dual crystal mics are still quite finicky. That should be really cool.

Hooked it up last night. It sounds like the mic in the song Puttin' On The Ritz by Taco when you speak into it. Just for the fun of it, I sang that song with it, and without having to use alot of effects, just a delay, it sounded just like the song. I love it!!!!
