Well, I get a little sample taste of Italian karaoke when I was in Italy last week, next week I will be in Houston. Anyone know any good joints to check out?

Hey kameragurl I will be staying at the Marriott at 916 Dallas Street and they say it is located in the heart of downtown Houston. Any good ones located within walking distance?

Update.

Well, don't try Spotlight Karaoke in Houston. Their communication sucks. They don't return messages.

I ended up at Molly's Pub on Main Street downtown Houston.

They had the KJ in a little corner between the outside door and the bar. It was so cramped that the singers had to read the lyrics off a big screen located behind the host. So,,, away from the crowd.

That aside, I had a wonderful experience. He lacked a bit of bass but otherwise the sound was top notch. He was using compuhost, SM58 mics (both wireless) and QSC mains (didn't catch the model # but he said they would do 1000 watts). Best sound I have ever heard at other shows. His books lacked professionalism, 2 books with just artist and song listed (no manus) they were in need of a bit of repair, he didn't have them in protective sheets. His song slips were strewn on top of the same table, some already filled out and he announced that singers could write their songs on the back of used slips. (Green I know).

Not a large rotation, I got to sing 5 times and the singers/non singers got into nearly every song sang by all. I had all of them singing and swaying to Piano Man and when I did Mama Let Him Play and Longview, the place got crazy. I talked to the host a bit and let him know where I was from and that I was a host. I offered no advice but he did let me know he had been there a couple years and he got $200 per night. I let him know as I left at the end of the night that he had the best show I had been too and gave him my card and asked him to email me sometime.

It's tough finding a good place without spending a lot of time online. Houston even has a karaoke site with links for Monday, Tuesday, etc to where you can go. It looks like it is in dire need of updating. I was limited however to proximity as I wanted to keep it downtown near where I was staying. I just happened to get lucky and walking past this place and remembered seeing it in google somewhere while looking for a Thursday night show but ended up going on Friday.

Anyway, I recommend this place if you ever go to Houston.

The last time I went to Spotlight Karaoke was a long time back. The sound was horrible and so was the kj. I think that place is or was on either Richmond or Westeimer.

WOW!! Sounds like a great time. This guy in Houston and me have a lot in common. I'm also "Spotlight Entertainment", use QSC speakers and sub (RCF too), SM 58 cordless mics, etc.
It's a small world!!
