I know 2 KJs.
The first one pays for and downloads new songs as they are requested on the night'
That is how he is building his collection.
No media shift.
The second KJ bought a loaded disk.
This is the UK. Sunfly and Zoom.
He does his show on a saturday.
On the sunday he buys online the new songs that were sung.
He methodically keeps up to date with it.
Now they both told me that they know many who do that.
I like the idea of the first one since I don't have a massive collection.
I think I will now go with it. Am I thinking it correctly?

damn, wish we could get away with that in the states. i would love to be able to buy a song on the fly like that. great way to build your library with only songs people actually want to sing without the dupes.

Yes I am aware of the produb licence.
Only because you posted about it earlier.

May not be media shifting, depends who you speak to at pro-dub. I've been told it isn't (however if you copy that track for a back up... then you do need a pro dub licence). I've also know of another DJ who was told because you aren't actually changing the format of a download it doesn't count as media shifting no matter how many copys you make.

Pro-dub has also assured me that they have done an active marketing campaign so all working Dj's should know about it.
Personally for me, I'd like to make sure I have a hard copy of any song, at least that way I have physical evidence that I've brought it, so at least some rights have gone to the karaoke company.

I see nothing wrong with downloading songs as needed. I hope you are getting paid well. 50+ unique songs in a night and you are spending $100 to make?? Most download sites provided by manufacture are $1.99 per song.
Can someone please explain to me why one could not get away with this in the states? Who telling you you can't? Who has showed up at your show and said you can't do that?

With Best Buy pulling music cds and DVD from their shelves and replacing with gaming software I think tells you about the shift in the music market going to digital. Nobody says you can't download karaoke music in the states and it is ilegal. Yes most digital download sites are for personal use but now the difinative answer for USA has now been spelled out at ERGMUSIC.COM. If you want to download karaoke music for commercial use in the USA it is legal! Since SONY and ERG work together I would think they would have the legalities worked out for the USA.
