Must have missed that part. I see it about the DJ music, but nothing about the karaoke itself.
BTW the latest & greatest doesn't necessarily apply to karaoke, our 20 YO crowds sing & request music from the 70's-early 2000's. I keep up with new releases through subscriptions (on disc) but very few 'new' todays music is actually sung no matter how popular it is on the radio. New country does get sung more.

Ok. I saw that. Don't see where the legal part is for karaoke. Only see it for dj music.
Just out of curiosity, what is there format for karaoke? A video or mp3g?

ERG Music currently only has a download agreement in place with Sony Music Entertainment and some independent labels, representing about 30% of popular music content overall. We expect to be adding the other major labels and the balance of the indies over the next few months. Sign up for our HitList and we’ll let you know as other labels come on board with the ERG program.

Also, part of the value that ERG offers is the selection of content that is most valuable to you as a professional DJ. Therefore, content that is less usable will not be online for immediate download. However, if you have a need for a particular song, please let us know, and we may be able to make it available for you.

When your company signs up for the service (remember this is for professionals only) all the legal documentation is cover there and rights as a professional to use the downloaded content from ERG and affiliate labels.

Yes I know who Sony is.
Again I will state, I see it legal for dj, haven't seen it on the site for karaoke other than downloads are available. Dj music is not karaoke music. This is the part i'd like to see.

But the banner going across the top on one of the affiliate sites still said that it was up to the user to determine the terms of use from each karaoke manufacturer. I think this is wishful thinking and really only applies to the DJ part. Even though they have a US section, aren't the places you download from still in Canada? Selectatrack even came up as a link.

I would like it to be true. Just not convinced yet.

Well I found the Canadian site for ERG and discovered you cannot buy the songs but lease them and that it appears you have to be a member of AVLA. AVLA does not have the authorization for leasing/format changing agreements for karaoke due to the sync licencing. Further I couldn't find any karaoke tracks.

Here is their Important Notice:

As one of the DJs, Nightclubs and other music professionals who subscribe to ERG's CD/DVD Subscription Services, you'll enjoy the ultimate effectiveness and convenience when it comes to acquiring music. Subscribers receive guaranteed, immediate, first-run distribution of ERG CDs, records or DVDs as soon as they come off the press, ensuring that you have the best new music as soon as possible.

Important Legal Notice!
All promotional CD compilations produced by ERG Music in Canada are licensed by the participating record labels through the Audio Video Licensing Agency Inc. (AVLA) on the conditions that they are acquired on a Leased basis only and are not sold. The license agreement with AVLA further requires that these programs are distributed only to commercial users and are not available to the general public. You are required to confirm eligibility prior to acquiring these CDs programs. In addition, purchasers forfeit any right of resale and must further agree that any sound recordings provided to them will not be duplicated in any way.

If you qualify as an authorized user and wish to acquire ERG Music promotional CD compilations, you must read and agree to the terms and conditions as follows:

I agree that as a subscriber and lessee of ERG Music, I am subject to the terms and conditions of the agreement between AVLA and ERG Music, including but not limited to the following:

1. Recorded music compositions embodied on digital programs leased from ERG Music are not to be duplicated, sold, or otherwise distributed.

2. Where indicated, the copyright in the recorded music compositions embodied on digital programs leased from ERG Music are the property of the AVLA record companies.

3. All lease agreements for digital programs with ERG Music are subject to, and terminate upon the termination of the AVLA/ERG Music licensing agreement. All ERG Music digital programs must be returned to ERG Music upon written notice of termination.

4. The lessee understands that this acknowledgement applies to all digital programs acquired from ERG Music.

5. I understand that Entertainment Resources Group (ERG Music) CD compilations are licensed only for promotional use by commercial users and that any other use including unauthorized resale, distribution, public display, duplication, violation of applicable laws, including federal copyright laws, or any other unauthorized use, is strictly prohibited. Purchasers violating these conditions will be subject to any legal actions resulting from such misuse, including but not limited to, criminal prosecution.

6. All respective copyrights in the sound recordings and musical works embodied on ERG Music CDs are the property of participating artists, composers, authors, publishers and record labels as applicable.


Also I have never seen any karaoke music put out by Sony, unless thy do under a different name.
