Not sure if this qualifies, but it does happen at karaoke, so here's the problem.
I'm really not much of a hugger, but when you've gotten to know many people at a venue, that you frequent, there seems to be a lot of greeting, and good-bye hugging expected. Now I can usually get away with a simple hand shake with the males, but my problem is, being a short person(border-line dwarf), when I hug the females, no matter how high up I try to reach, I usually end up cupping both cheeks... Most don't seem to notice, but every once in a while, I get a dirty look, and maybe even a slapped face. Aside from standing on a chair everytime I hug someone, does anyone have any suggestions, that would help me out? Once one guy initiated a hug with me, and I almost got my eye poked out....learned never to hug males, no matter come he!! or high water.....thanks

Could you do the one arm hug and keep your arms low instead of reaching up? I don't think any ladies would be too upset if you wrapped one arm around their legs just above the knee level.

Upon envisioning such a predicament, I suppose I would opt to not reach around any further than the sides of the waist/hip area.

However, at that level, I would always be on guard for that unexpected "bust-in-the-mouth" :o So-To-Speak 8)

Looks like someone thinks we are in need of a subject change....... :D

Actually, my boyfriend is way taller than I am and dancing face to uh------is definitely also a cause for comment. Luckily he doesn't like to dance too often.

My rules are simple. With men -- hugging is OK, but no reacharounds. With women, full body hugs are allowed and even encouraged.

Male karaoke hosts should just refrain from hugging thier female singers. (why do you do that anyhow?)

It never fails to make the hubby jealous.

Though, I gotta admit, I have a local female KJ, and when I go out it's usually a "hi" and a hug... it just seems wierd when it's a guy. (and this is coming from a natural born hugger... I do hug all my friends and family, all the time)

(Johnny, I'm 5'2", so you don't have that excuse with me- hands off my bum!!)

Why? I hug everyone, or rather everyone hugs me, I just hug back. Gals or guys - hugging has become a huge thing at least around here and everyone hugs everyone.

Well, the most gallant thing would be a kiss on the hand and a bow. But I don't know what you can do for the females.

Yeah! I'm with Lonman. Everybody hugs around here, too. I never initiate it either. It just happens. When I first started hosting it seemed rather odd to hug all these women being married and all, but I struggle through, somehow:)

Well, I guess I must be WAAAAY out of line, because not only do the female regulars hug with me, but also kiss hello, and goodbye. Guys get a handshake, and most of the time a shoulder bump, with a pat on the back. I don't know, I've ALWAYS been a hugger, and kisser. Must be an ITALIAN thing. I'm 6'8", so when I hug the women, I'm bent over at the waist, so that eliminates any form of contact below the waist. I MUCH prefer hugging women while they're standing, and I'm seated, then we're eye-to-eye. I think if everyone knows what type of person you are, it's almost automatic. I can tell the warmth, or "lack of it", usually the first time I hug someone. If they feel "cold", I make it a point NOT to initiate a hug the next time. NEVER had a problem. DEFINATELY get some looks if I slow dance with short women.

I'd try to go with sideways, half hugs. You know, just kinda putting your arm around the waist.

I'll reiterate- I'm a natural born hugger too. I still even hug my mom & dad by, even if I see them every day... I hug my kids when they leave the house after a visit.. I hug friends when we meet up, cousins, etc. I don't know, maybe I just feel that way regarding karaoke people because I get so much flack about it on the homefront. But people do it.... even people who have been gone then show back up, the first thing they do is walk up and hug- both male and female. Hugging has become a "hey, how are ya?" gesture, and it justs seems odd (sometimes).

Geez, make me feel like an ice princess, that's not the case. (anyone who knows me would argue that) I even hugged Kurt and Sharon (from here) when I met them. There are just a few KJ's who have come and gone- and still come in once in a while- that instantly hug. (me... but of course not the hubby) Sometimes it would just be nice to be offered a hand, because of course you can't NOT hug when someone does that. (right?)

Nah, I don't hug people I don't know so handshakes apply there. But once I get to know you a little, hugs are fine. As far as shaking hands - i've been pulled into hugs from a simple handshake maybe not a hug per se but a pulled handshake to the point where one arm goes around the back while still shaking hands - this happens with guys more. Again, it's just very commonplace around here these days. Everyone hugs everyone.
