I love the song Fire Flies by Owl City. It seems the guys think it's to feminine to sing, but I've gotten one of them to do it. :D

Haven't had "Fireflies" done at the adult show yet but it is a must for the Kid Shows.

I used to think that Broadway would be among the most popular genres that a karaoke crowd would request. A Les Mis tune was what originally drew me to karaoke when I was 16. It just seemed to me that the kind of people that wanted to go up and sing in front of a crowd were just the kind of people who liked a good showtune.

Alas, one can't take what's true for oneself and make it true for everyone else.

In my experience, about 8/10 of people, in general, will sing karaoke.

Oh, maybe they won't during their first visit to the party or bar, but eventually, you'll get them up there singing (usually with a parter or two).

For even the most reluctant, there's something struggling deep in their gut, screaming "let me up there! I want to sing!" The trick seems to be feeding their inner 'star' while simultaneously allaying their self-conscious fears.

Well, only about 1/10 people I meet even know one Broadway song. Who knows, though, with Glee being so popular, maybe this'll change?

Oops--no judgment was implied--we are in a Country Bar so I couldn't imagine who would do Fireflies--but you reminded me that the kids cheer the second they hear the first bits of the music.

As for Broadway, when we first started attending karaoke people were doing songs from Phantom and Cats and there was even still a KJ in the vest/bow tie mode who would kick up his feet and do New York New York. Now the only showtunes we hear are popular songs that might have been included in movies. The last "Show Tune" sang at our show was something from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Well--Summer Nights is still around.......
