I was smoking out on the porch before the show and ashed on the ground not even thinking. The owner yelled at me in front of the patrons like I was 12 yrs old. Then he proceeded to ask if I did that at home. I was caught off guard and said yes I ash on my porch or outside at home. Woops wrong thing to say. He yelled even more saying I grew up in a barn.
I didn't put my cigarette out on the ground. I ashed. I figure if it bothers him that much I'll respect his wishes, but is it just me or is that weird?
It was embarrassing to be talked to like that, but that's his personality. I usually can diffuse it by making a joke, but this time he really caught me off guard. I really don't live in a barn. I swear.

....be lucky you have an owner that cares about his place.
People ash on the carpet inside at my bar. My owner could care less!

Oh my god, how dare you? You should be arrested!
Yeah, I guess like Topher said, at least he cares about his place. But that IMHO was a little bit too much.

Yes, he cares about his place, but obviously not to people he has working for him, bringing in a crowd to make the place he cares about some money. He shouldn't have re-acted like that. And you should tell him that. It was an accident.

If you were marring up his porch with black stains by scraping your cigarrate on the ground (or even just stamping it out), that's one thing. But a tirade started by a flick of ash? That's mild OCD. Don't fret over it. He's the weirdo, not you.

And did he provide an ash recepticle outside? But really the response was way too high for the action. The boy has other issues.

..... guess the wind doesn't blow there????? We have ash trays everywhere here and while there are always plenty of butts in em, the wind sends the ash anywhere it wants........... Peace, S.

Yes there are ash trays. I didn't even give it a thought though because I was outside.
He once kicked a patron out for spitting on the porch. Okay really gross, but to kick him out?

Yeah, gross, and more uncivilized than flicking ash, if you ask me. But, still, kicking him out? Talk about biting the hand that feeds you.

Is it a new deck or something that he built recently? That might explain some of his hyper-sensitivity. I don't agree with his reaction, scolding someone like a child is never a productive reaction. However, I don't disagree with him having an issue with your use of smoking materials. Simply "ashing" on a deck or something similar CAN stain it permanently, plus it's a major pain in the butt to clean off all that ash. Also, I don't know a smoker out there who hasn't flicked off the ash only to have the cherry fall as well, that can cause additional damage when that happens. I don't think it's wrong of him to expect his employees or contractors to set an example for his customers of how to treat his facilities. But certainly he should have handled it in a much more mature and professional manner. I do also agree with Timberlea though, if he's going to make any issue of it at all, he darn well better have provided ample ash trays or other appropriate receptacles.
Personally, I'm a former smoker (haven't taken a drag in over 8 years now) and my wife is still a smoker. Even when I was smoking, I found people's casual attitude toward how they handle the ash and butts to be at minimum quite impolite and in extreme cases downright childish.
In the end you have a right to be treated properly and a simple request as an aside to ask that you confine your ashes to the appropriate areas would have been the right way to handle it. Had he done that, I don't think his request would have been unfair.

Owner should lighten up.
California things are different. Nearly everyone has a "medical" card and smokes pot outside.
Heh maybe he'd lighten up if he were in California.

I guess part of the definition of a stinging rebuke is that it stings. Who likes to get chided like that? Not me. On the other hand, an owner who is that vigilant is probably vigilant about other aspects of the business, and at a time when venues are closing and KJ 's are losing days (like an email I just got from a KJ saying they are dropping a day at a place and losing a gig at another place) that could be a good thing. There is a place I used to sing at where they never swept up the autumn leaves that piled up on the walkway outside, so come fall, it kind of had this decaying atmosphere to it. You get used to stuff like that when you let it slide, but it does make the place look less appealing.
On a note about cigarettes, I gave a guy a ride home once that had a little extra to drink. It was only a few blocks out of the way, so not a big deal, but in that short time, he lit a cigarette. I never had a smoker in my car, so I thought "oh well, it's only a few blocks". However, the next thing I know, I see an ember fall from the cigarette, land on the seat, and burn a hole through it. Arghhh. The seat still has a hole in it. I remember as a kid being in someone's car that had a seat full of such holes and wondering what caused it.
Anywho, I don't like being corrected like that either, but time heals all wounds.

Consider the source. Also, you're like family to him, you know better, and you're the last person he'd figure would do that. He's got the typical Dr. Jeckle/Mr. Hide pesonality(I have it too... ), and he probably was mad at someone else, and letting it out at you. When I came in that past Saturday, I said Hi, and offered my hand, and he looked at me like, I was bothering him(he was just setting at the bar doing nothing). Towards the end of the night, he walks by me, gives me a big smile, and pats me on the back.....go figure....... .....Babs, don't be so sensitive....he's the only one that comes out looking like a weenie to the other people....besides...he doesn't realize you are capable of whipping his a$$.....my shoulder still hurts, and your knuckles left a nasty scar....

I was waiting for that.
Not really sensitive about it. I realize most everyone knows how the owner can be. I was really curious though what people thought about ashing outside because I didn't give it a second thought.
Tony - The floor is cement. and believe me I'll make a special effort never to do it again.
I'm respectful of the bar. I actually do treat it like it was my home. Heck I even clean up the bathroom when I go in there and empty ash trays outside for the bartenders.

I could understand if you were on a deck, or standing on some kind of 'indoor/outdoor' carpeting or something.. but a cement slab?
Seriously?
And then he's going to admonish you like you're a child?
I'd have told the dude to f himself and packed up and left.
Putting your cigarette out on the floor, sure.. but simply flicking ash on an outdoor patio with a concrete slab?
Come on.
Sounds like somebody suffering from a bad case of short d!ck syndrome.
