Been doing this a pretty long time, and this is a first for me. I was asked if I could provide a basic sound system for a wedding this Saturday very close to my home. It is for somebody I don't know, and all they want is a mixer, speakers and wireless mic capability. What would be a fair price for rental? and how do ensure my gear from loss/damage? deposit? They don't want my services, just my gear. Does a $100 sound fair? I dunno, what are your thoughts?
By the way, just got this call about an hour ago, looks like they aren't prepared at all, but it is going to be a very nice wedding at a guest ranch (think 5 star place). I do have an extra sound system I could use for this very thing.
Thank you in advance.
Scott

How much is the equipment worth? Charge them 10% of the price of the equipment when it was new. Ask them to put up 25% as a deposit. I think that is fair. Make sure they know how to operate the equipment before you cut them loose with it. Good luck!

Actually that has crossed my mind. Honestly. I have sworn off doing weddings because of the hassle of the preparations necessary. And the headache of the wicked evil Bridezilla and Momzilla's. I had an idea for protecting my gear, but looks like that won't happen either. I was going to have one of my sons go out and "babysit" my gear. The wedding is only about 1/2 mile from my house, but I don't know these people, so I cannot say I can trust them to take care of things. So, still waiting on what is going to happen.

I wouldn't do it. They want the gear, they get me. The biggest problem is who is going to use it. Do they know what they are doing? Not a chance I'm willing to make. Do yourself a favour and refer them to a music store that rents out gear. The store most likely has insurance and/or staff who can make repairs.

Locate a proper audio rental place and send them there.

There you go. I did a DJ gig a month ago. Private party, custom stage and lighting. The bathroom was a way from the main building. I come back and there's some "son" of the owner messing with my stuff, he didn't like the background tunes I was playing.

Well, sorry to say the people never called the next day. So I just let them have their little home stereo system,, haha. I wasn't about to press the issue and put my gear at risk.

I would not do it. Good thing they did not call back. I get questions like this all the time. One of the first things I tell them is that I do not do weddings. Some are thinking they can just hook up an iPod and let the music play. Makes for a sucky reception in my opinion.
