I agree with Karen that a connection between the singer and host is important. I will try to connect with my singers making it a fun experience. In some instances, I'll use intro music while I call up a singer (theme from Kill Bill works great), and give them a nice build up. They love it and so does the crowd. The whole point is to make them feel like a star for the three minutes they're up there. I want to make my guests feel like they're on a TV show, where I am the host (doing whatever it takes) and they are the star.
