Remember this is an ALPHA version. A lot of features will be added later on, and there are tons of bugs to work out.

Haven't tested it at my show yet, but I will as soon as the FE/Kiosk stuff is ready to roll. For folks that don't use kiosks, it should be fine to test at your show.

I wrote a popular open source program. I did get to sell it for a fair amount of money, the rights to it. But not much compared to the thousands of companies that use it.

But more importantly, I built a career and business on it. It has employed me and allowed me to live a comfortable life, without killing myself.

Congratulations on your success. Toqer on the other hand is working the door at his club and giving away his software. Certainly there has got to be a buck in it for him somewhere.

I'm getting bribes :)
http://shup.com/Shup/438811/11010192223-Config.png

We're also enabling DBV's

http://shup.com/Shup/438812/110101922338-Config.png

Cash money for bribes

Some folks don't know what a DBV is. Here's a picture.

http://billacceptors.us/images/products/DBV301.jpg

But nah, it's going to go beyond that. We're talking folks putting cash in my machines, and buying new songs for the venue, on the venues credit card. Everyone get's that ability if they want to put the money into building the system.

Tricerasoft answer this if you're reading. We've been thinking of giving the kiosks disc burning ability (i.e. give customers an option to burn to disc, then we pay you and burn it on our site) That way if a customer wants to pay for a copy to take home, you(tricerasoft) gets paid your normal price for it. You cool with that?

Weed we're still really trying to figure out a good way to milk the sales. Other than that, I don't get paid anything for doing this, neither does anyone else. Maybe we're crazy?

Hi Toqer

Ive just downloaded the prog and I love the look of it. Really easy to get to grips with.
Just wondering if it would be possible to include a filler player in a later version. I know most people have winamp etc. but its good to be able to work from one interface.
Also is it possible to clear the database of songs or remove odd songs.

The import process seams to mix up the artist and track number.
I use Sf289-01 - Track - Artist but the artist column seems to contain the track number e.g. 01 02 etc and the Title column seems to contain the Track - Artist info.
e.g our song - Taylor Swift.
I know its work in progress just thought I`d feedback my findings.

Don`t know how you manage to produce such good stuff and give it away?
Maybe start a donations for devolpment fund through PayPal as I know I would be willing to contribute for your efforts.

Cheers

Paul

That's the point -- you have to build the business. I worked 16 hours a day for several years to get my stuff over the top. Then things became easier once I had invested that time.

If you try and sell it right off the bat, you are competing with the likes of Invicion and MTU. If you build a great, free, hoster and then monetize it by selling tracks (like Toqer proposes) then you have a way to build the business. The karaoke niche would be hard to monetize, though I like the jukebox idea.

Open source is a way to a goal. There are many ways to build a credential which you can then leverage into a business. Some get involved in professional organizations, some get advanced degrees, some write a book. I wrote a computer program.

I think I've seen you on our forums before. There's a donate link right on our home page.

Historically I've just used it to fund any trips we do to NAMM (which I could REALLY use some funds for this year) and pay for the website and domain. Donations and such have slowed down with the economy (I think I got maybe $40 last year?) I try other ways to make cash, google ads, but I use one account spread across 8 or so domains. That nets me $100 a year or so.

NAMM trips aren't cheap. Hotels purposely raise their prices during the show, and travel in general isn't cheap. I live 5 hours from LA, so I usually drive down there. It takes my van 1.5 tanks (at about $70 @ tank) to get there. Still, cheaper and more convienent than flying, especially when hauling equipment :)

Luckily though it's not a one man show, it's me and a few other guys. We all kind of support each other in various ways. My contrib is bugging karaoke companies, website, make sure whenever we get a good op to demo, I'm there like a boss.

Changing gears, can anyone try it on other OS's for us? If you got linux/OSX try it , it's java.

What's the EXE for then? That's how I ran it on Windows....is it not necessary at all?

I tried running aplu5.jar with java -jar. (1.6.20, Sun.) I get:

Invalid or corrupt jarfile aplu5.jar

All the rest have no Main-class header

Hi Toqer

I`m a serial Lurker on a few of the KJ/DJ forums.

We mainly just do home parties etc. although my son gets the odd booking for Uni friends birthdays etc.

Keep up the good work.

Will check out your home page.

Cheers

Hi Toqer

I`ve sorted ther song import/naming problem - the songs I chose as a trial were the only songs I had named in a different convention to my normal Doh. When I set the correct naming convention in the options everything went fine.

Cheers

Paul
