Not sure what OS you're running.. but on Windows XP, just right click on the desktop, go down to 'properties' and click on the second monitor and tick the box that says 'extend my desktop to this monitor' or words to that effect, and provided the monitor is on, it should kick on as soon as you click 'apply'.
You have to click on settings first before you see the second monitor screen
