I'd like to add a little more bottom end punch for the dance floor.

I'm currently running Yamaha BR15's from a QSC power amp, which for the venues i'm playing is far more than adequate for running karaoke.. but I spin DJ tunes in between singers, and the dance stuff could use some more low end thump.

So i'm thinking adding a portable, powered sub to lay down some additional bottom end around the dance floor is in order, and need some recommendations.

I'd prefer a powered unit, since i'm not interested in adding another amp to the rack, and it can't be huge, since real estate in my gig vehicle is limited.. so something about the size of a BR15 or SV115.

I'm not opposed to building something, either. Few years ago I ran across a guy who had built a custom sub enclosure with a 15" speaker and powered by a car stereo amp that hit hard.. felt like somebody kicking you in the chest at 10 feet away.

Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I use one of these. They also do a powered version.
Very light and small.
It is only a 12" speaker but the cone travels twice as far.

Take a look at the Yorkville LS200P.

It's small, but packs a nice punch for it's size. I have a friend that has one and it's quite nice.

If you have the room, jump to the LS700P.

If I didn't have a pair of Community 18" subs this is what I'd likely have instead.

You would want a minimum 15" - 18" would be better, you typically don't want smaller than your main cabs low drivers. Don't know what budget you are looking for, also your sub should at least match the per channel rating of your QSC amp, combined power rating would be better but not necessary.

Possibly a bit too small or light for you.
Maybe too punchy and loud.

Yes once. For what it is it sounded good. The one I heard actually was using it with a Yamaha Stagepass system with 8" mains. But I still wouldn't run one with a 15" main cab.

What amp are you using? I have an old not very powerful amp and I can run a top and a sub on each channel. I use the passive EV Sb122 subs. They are one of the lightest and smallest subs on the market and run around $389 each, but if you shop around and negotiate you can find them for less. I got mine for $279 each open box. One of the audio companies I deal with has a Thanksgiving Black Friday sale every year with some great deals- Northern Lights FX now called NLFX. Look them up on the internet and give them a call you could save some $$$. Tell them The Wizard Of OZ from Our DJ Talk sent you.

I'm a big fan of EV but find the little plastic 12"s to be nothing great.

They make a QSC HPR151 a nice option also


For small gigs we use 2 QSC K-Subs. We also have QSC powered 18"s. Not really a recomendation the 18"s are very nice but big and heavy, the K-Subs never met our expectaions.

I have had bad luck with Yorkville, The mains went into limit very easy. Both of our powered 15" subs died right after the 2 year warrenty was up.

I really like QSC for their 6 year warrenty.

The SBA760 maximum calculated SPL is 128 dB.
That is really good.
Only 3db less than the little plastic 12"s.
10 more dB means "sounds twice as loud to the human ear".
Since the Yamaha's are 98db
they actually are a pretty good balance.

Actually +3db is tice as loud to the human ear.

128 db is twice as loud as 125db, 131db is twice as loud as 128db and so on.

No mate. That is a popular misconception.
+10db is twice as loud to the human ear.
Ok it is not actually 10 but very close to it.

I have just picked up the manual for a Yamaha mixer.
I see they do not properly explain the decibel either.
They say 3db is a doubling of loudness.
It is to an oscilloscope. Not to the human ear though.
