Could use some guidance.Have all of our karaoke music burned onto hard drive of our Dell Inspiron laptop.We currently do not have have this protected(backed up).We use CompuHost as our karaoke software.Could I get some assistance in how to transfer this to an external hard drive.I am about computer literate as long as some crayon drawings are involved . As well, are there any particular external hd's that you would recommend for this process?.My intent here is to get my music on the external then be able to clear off my internal hd on my laptop.Will provide more info as needed.
I imagine one screw up I have to deal with is the fact all music that has been burned onto the laptop via Plexitor is all contain within one file I believe. Am I ON A CORRECT TRAIL HERE?.Or is Compuhost going to make this a real complicated process?

Should be as easy as copying from your internal HD to your external HD, then go into Compuhost, click on songlist, and import.

You don't transfer music with Compuhost but a good free transfer program is deb's file to folder. It's how I transfered the gem series over to my external. the website is http://www.debssoftware.com/


The other good freeware program is latshaw's file syncronizer. www.latshawsystems.com is the website.


The difference between the two is that while debs moves the files into folders based on disc# File Sync copies it and leaves a copy on your main hard drive. Personally I prefer the deb's method over file sync's but I use both programs.

As a last resort you could always use windows explorer.
(Assuming you are using Windows)

I don't understand the need for any software program to copy the files. Is this external hard drive USB? If it is, just connect it to your laptop and copy the files from your laptop to your external drive. It's as simple as copy and paste.

Either one of my program suggestons does it neater and faster than just copy and paste. File to folder creates folders based on the disc number of the track.
File Sycronizor does it even faster than file to folder while keeping the folder structure the same.

Copy and paste only knows how to do a mirror image.
Also it can only copy at the restricted speed of USB 2, network or firewire.
What do you know that we don't?

Personally, I'm with Danny. I've done this 5 or 6 times.

To the OP, buy 2 external hard drives. You can buy a terrabyte (1000 gb) on ebay for probably around $120? Buy two. Back up the music to both, rename one hard drive to whatever the name is on the other. Then if you are using one hard drive, and it craps out during a show or whenever, you can plug the backup into the laptop and compuhost will recognize it. Otherwise you have to import all the songs again and you don't want to have to do that in the middle of a show.

Oh, and if you don't need a whole terrabyte (and in 5 years when you might, they will be much cheaper or there will be another file storage format) you can buy 500 gb, or 320 gb, or less. Of course, the more gb you buy, the more you get for your money. I would recommend ebay and I use WD Western Digital but have used other manus, never had any issues.

Call me lazy but I am fed up of auditioning software.

I've never had a problem just copying & pasting to a new drive - no software. If your files are already in folders & named, then what's the problem. Connect the new drive (format if necessary), copy from your existing drive to new drive.

You do not need any software to copy from your laptop or hard drive to another hard drive. Why take an un-needed and additionlal un-necessary step? I don't get it. What's the point? I make back ups of my karaoke folder on my laptop to an external hard drive all lthe time just by copy and pasting. You get an exact duplicate of what's on your laptop. Simple as that. Like I said, no software needed.

I have a folder that my ripper always rips to. From there I use file to folder to setup folders based on disc ID, names the folder and moves the files out of the folder that I ripped it to. I then use file syncronozer to copy the new files over to my external. The only discs that I have on my external that I don't have on my backup drive is the GEM series.
