Yep, it's tuff alright!
That's why I sent my girlfriend one earlier this month for Christmas. She and the SM-58 have a lot in common. They both hold up well and remain true.
I ain't sayin she could remain buried for a year and pop out of the ground singin and dancing, but she has been dropped on her head several times. Except for her crossed eyes, you would never know it.

To be honest, it's not totally fair to say Shure SM-58 mics are tuff only because they are made by Shure.
They are tuff because they are a dynamic mic. All stage grade dynamic mics share the same basic construction. The method used to convert sound to signal in dynamics allows all of them to be inheirently tuff.
I'm betting you could take 10 different Shure competitors and subject them to the same spectacular trials and only one would fail if then.
For my buck, it's not that the Shure sm-58 is tuffer, it's instead that I know it will sound better over a broader range of audio demands than all the rest in the same price range. It's simply the very best choice when you are limited to "Who makes the best all around mic that will produce the best sound and endure abuse too."
Test drop any condensor or ribbon mic and see if it fails....of course it will even if you paid 5,000 bucks for it and it too was made by Shure.

I would disagree. I just had an Audix OM-2 fail after one good drop ($100 mic). I also had a Sennheiser 835 give up after about three years of hard use. Never had that happen with an SM58, even after ten years.
I still believe the Shures are just tougher. I'm not saying the other quality brands are fragile, it's just been my experience that they aren't quite up to Shure's level of durability.

Nope.... I prefer AKG... built like tanks... had a wireless used almost every night by customers and lasted 8 years... Great sound, wonderful range, 35 hour battery life (on 2 AA batteries)...

Wireless is a different animal. I seriuosly doubt ANY wireless could be as durable as a wired SM58.

Actually, the SM-57 is NOT as durable as a 58. The biggest problem with the 57 is the stupid plastic screen that is not nearly as easily replaced as the windscreen on a 58. The rest of the mic is equally as durable (since according to sure they're the same internals). However, I will say that the Beta58A is every bit as durable. Even the 87 series (SM and Beta) are pretty close to as durable.

The wireless AKG with 35 hr battery life got my attention. My wireless Shure U124D Beta58s only get 13-14 hrs on 2 AA batteries.
Care to post what's the AKG Model #? Thanks!

Huh. I got a beta 87a.
Been dropped onto a carpet twice, both times from five foot.
Been soldered twice.
The shock mount is trashed.
Rubber glue now holds the cartridge in place.
Anyone know where I can get a replacement shock mount ?

Egads!! What a horror story. That sucks, man our 87's have been through a ton of abuse and never had to be worked on. To get the replacement shock mount, you'd have to go to a Shure dealer and they'd be able to order one for you.

I believe it is in one of those videos. Plastic ring broke off in the 7? story drop test but mic still seemed to work fine.

Or just call Shure directly and order it. Whenever I need a part, that's what I do. They're very helpful, know their stuff and shipping is quick.
In your case, you would be best of to contact the regional office in Germany:

No, I believe what he's looking for is the internal shock mount that the cartridge mounts to. That was one of the big "features" of the 87, meant to reduce handling noise significantly.

Yes it is the internal shock mount.
The design seems a very good one.
There should be very little handling noise.
I think there must have been a fault with the rubber.
it is only about an eighth of an inch square.
Sounds better than the SM58 with a female voice.
I got it for my niece so haven't heard a male vocal through it.
Then I prefer the AKG D5 to the SM58
says Jerry running for cover.
