http://nationalkaraokeleague.com/ I posted this last season in Singer's forum and only got 2 responses. Now a new season starts in Feb. The rules are to sing a song and also to add a performance to it. Some people went all out and did full costumes while we kept it tone down and just did minimal dressup.
Last season a guy won a round by singing Q Lazarus' Goodbye Horses and portraying Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs. Since it was halloween week a team won a group round with their Rocky Horror Time Warp in all costume.
One team did my idea of MIA's Paper Planes where someone sings and teammates threw paper planes around while another person had a rifle and cash for the chorus.
Has anyone heard of a karaoke league night in your area? Anyone care to join in this brainstorm session to think something would be funny or witty to perform?

I have not heard of a karaoke league, but would like to see something that would a) encourage creativity, and b) reward participation.
But, how do you do that?
Maybe get a decibel meter and reward each singer whose round of applause reaches a certain level with an entry into a random drawing (the more entries, the better chance of winning).
This would also encourage singers to sing songs that the crowd likes, rather than obscure music that nobody knows or likes.
That's my 2 cents.

They hand out ballots to everyone in the bar, each team gets a colored shirt and they get voted on 1st place to last place per round, three rounds (two solo one group) and at the end of all three rounds they say which team won which round and overall. Points are given per round and overall on ballots that get tallied for each week's game. This league lasts about two months.

I did a quick glance of the URL, and I don't quite get it. When I hear the term League used, I associate it with a competition against other leagues in other locations (like a Dart League that plays against other teams in other Bars). I didn't notice anything like that discussed in the rules of how it works. And, based on that, I don't grasp the term National. National would imply that the winners Sing-off against other teams located in other states at some point in time. This just sounds like a more unique way of running a Local Karaoke Contest at your local venue.

They started the league with the intent of expanding it over time. There is an eventual winning team and the end of the season so it is very much a league. If you join individually you'll get placed with a team, make new friends etc. Given the plethora of karaoke locations in Austin, this is something different and it PACKS the bar ahead of normal karaoke hours.

Here's a news clip from the Championships that happened this weekend. All in all a pretty good time. Including a group doing a whip cream fight.
