What we are missing here is Earl started off his post with, "When time permits," which would indicate that he didn't have people still waiting to sing when he does this.

so nobody in a karaoke bar wants to sing another song but a bunch of people are willing to get up and sing a group song???? Doesn't seem like any karaoke bar that I've ever been in.

KJ to the crowd: "There's only about 10 minutes left to the show. Does anybosy want to sing another song? I have time for 3 more singers"

Crowd: crickets chirping and no one volunteers to sing.

and then Dorothy wakes up and she's back in Kansas.

I used to go to a show where the KJ his wife and daughter always sang the last 3 songs of the night, regardless of where the rotation was. People complained and they no longer have the gig.

The thread here was started by Earl asking for additional songs that he might choose to have a group sing, not whether you like the idea of group songs or not. That is called "hi-jacking" If you don't have any ideas of songs to add to his list, then it's not your place to agree or disagree with his question. But again, Bruce, you felt it in your all knowing power to try and turn his question into something about what "you" do or don't like, not what the OP is asking.

But think of it this way Bruce, and follow me on this one. If Earl does 3 group songs at the end of the night, and each group has at least 3 people in the group, that is at least 3 MORE people singing 3 MORE songs!! It really is a pretty good plan. It allows for the majority of the night, people singing the songs they want to sing as individuals, and still getting a few more turns onstage at the end. Whether you like the idea or not, wasn't the question being asked. It was "what additional songs to consider?"

Ok, now to add some more to the list for Earl...

Friends in Low Places - Garth Brooks
Happy Trails - Roy Rogers
Fun, Fun, Fun - Beach Boys

Like I said, endless songs to choose from.

If your singers are as you described, they may remember Yellow Submarine by the Beatles. Great group song that I've used many times. Also a little less known is Octopus' Garden, also by the Beatles. Another is Happy Trails by Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. That used to be their closing song.

In my experience, group songs quickly turn into scream fests with the drunkest of patrons trying to drown each other out. Why would I suggest more group songs when I am of the opinion that they are unnecessary to begin with?

If I disagree with the concept; why am I supposed to avoid the topic? Does my posting an opinion somehow ruin your day? Like you suggested to the OP; why can't you just ignore me if you don't agree....like you want me to ignore the topic if I disagree with the original premise?

One that's always worked well for me is Don McClean's "American Pie". I've also done Semisonic's"Closing Time" and Brad Paisley's "Alcohol". I too enjoy doing one group song to end the night and you know what? Since it's what I do at every show, I don't have any problems with the last 3 singers being upset. First, because they expect it, second because I'm a good enough host to plan my rotation appropriately so there aren't 3 last singers waiting to sing. Don't don't worry about Bruce acting like a D/B, you'll have to forgive him I mean after all his sh!t don't stink.

How I usually do the group song at the end of the night is I'll announce that I'm all done, then tell them they have one last chance to sing. I also tell those that didn't sing tonight that now is their chance with no pressure because it's a group song. I then leave all four of my mics up front, turned on and invite people to just come grab one and sing along with me. Start the song, I start singing, they join in and almost every time without fail the whole bar, club, etc is singing along by mid-way through the tune. It's a great way to end on a high note, everyone leaves with that event most recent in their head remembering how fun it was.

All I do is post my opinions. Everyone is free to agree or disagree with me. When they don't agree with me; I don't resort to calling people Dirt Bags or Douche Bags or whatever else D/B might stand for. I'm sure that my crap smells just as sweet as yours does MISTER LETITRIP. If anything, you are the one who portrays himself as an export of sorts, and probably rightfully so. I'm just a guy who likes to go to karaoke to sing and hear other people sing. The idea of a HOST choosing to sing AMERICAN PIE(almost nine minutes long) at the end of the night is just incredibly selfish (IN MY HUMBLE OPINION), WHEN 3 PEOPLE COULD HAVE HAD A CHANCE TO SING ANOTHER SONG.

Once again, after being insulted, I will take the high road and refrain from the immature name calling. Am I sorry for having opinions that differ from the pack???? NOT A BIT!

LOOK WHAT HAPPENS WHEN SOMEONE DARES TO HAVE A DIFFERENT OPINION THAN THE MAJORITY..... He gets called names and sarcastic responses from people who just don't happen to agree with him. sigh!

No, you posted your opinion, which in itself was off topic but fine. But then when the OP tried to turn things back to the topic at hand so he could get the help he was looking for, all you did was reiterate your same opinion again only the second time in a more confrontational and jerk-ish way while still doing nothing to assist the poster in his original quest for information.

The problem isn't your opinion, the problem isn't that you posted it, the problem is that all you did was attempt to belittle the OP and steer conversation away from the topic that he started this thread for.

If anything, I was belittling the concept of group songs. I was not belittling the person who does it. You can call me all the names you like if it makes you feel better but it doesn't make you look any better.

Sticks and Stones. Sticks and Stones.

...and I didn't reiterate the same opinion. My first post was about how I personally feel about group songs. My second post was in regard to how the next 3 people in the rotation would feel; whether or not I was one of them.

And neither opinion has anything to do with the poster's request, so the fact that you even feel the need to interject your opinion is a mystery to me. I can be just as pedantic as you. I never called you a name, I mearly said you were acting like a D/B and that your post was jerkish. See we can play those games all night.

If there's one thing this forum knows about me it's that I'll call a spade a spade. That's MY opinion that I choose to express despite it having no relavance to the original topic.

Since we're being "Pedantic" those words would be spelled "Merely and Relevant". Once again pointing something out without any name calling. :withstupid: :D :D :D

Bruce...

Don't you think, rather than derail this thread, you might have been better advised to begin a new thread titled something like... "Why I Don't Like Group Songs At The End Of The Night"

Nowhere did I ask anyone for an opinion as to whether group songs are a good or bad thing... In fact, I stated they work very well for me and my crowds.

I simply asked for assistance in coming up with more titles that might be appropriate in an already-established sing-along environment.

The fact that you do not care for end-of-show sing-alongs, and chose to say so by hi-jacking the thread was rude if nothing else... Consequently, your opinion means nothing to me... nor apparently to the majority of posters who took the time to respond to my original post.

Again, I'd like to thank those who chose to treat this thread in the spirit it was intended... and those who defended that spirit. Your contributions are appreciated.

By the way... Tony said "How I usually do the group song at the end of the night is I'll announce that I'm all done, then tell them they have one last chance to sing. I also tell those that didn't sing tonight that now is their chance with no pressure because it's a group song. It's a great way to end on a high note, everyone leaves with that event most recent in their head remembering how fun it was."

That's pretty-much how I handle it as well... but you've added a couple of hints that I'm about to steal... Thanks.

Cheers

Earl

Yeah Earl I look at it this way, the last song of the night is the last chance you have to "leave them wanting more" (any professional entertainer can tell you how important that is). Merely bringing up yet another singer is fine, but it doesn't give that "closure" of the end of the night and rarely is going to be something that's going to leave people walking away thinking gosh that sure was fun. On the other hand, get the people singing along, make it a huge deal and give a high energy closing at the end of the song (something bigger and more exciting than simply "thank you and goodnight") they'll walk out of the bar with a far different energy.

I'm a firm believer in the importance of the close whether we're talking about a Karaoke show, a speech, a band concert or whatever. Anytime you're playing to an audience the thing they remember most is the end of the show. So making it a big deal, over and above the rest of the show (i.e. make it a finale) is a great way to get people to look forward to the next time you're gonna be there.

As my friend Lucas would say.... "My sedimends ag-zackly" Don't know for a fact Tony, but I suspect we'd make a helluva hosting team.

Cheers

Everybody sing along.....kumbaya my lord kumbaya.

Maybe EVERY topic should be started with a disclaimer explaining that everyone with an opinion different than the original poster's should start a new thread and don't EVER disagree with any original posters, regardless of the topic???

I guess every one of those microphone threads have been hi-jacked as well since no one ever seems to be able to agree if the SM58 is the king of all microphones?

I guess if someone starts a thread about how do you like your steak cooked; I shouldn't be able to post that I really don't like steak??? because the fact that someone doesn't like steak doesn't belong in a thread about cooking steak, right?

"What's your favorite RAP SONG?" should never be followed up by a negative opinion about RAP MUSIC either, because the original question only wants positive replies about RAP.

This is a forum. It is not a private club. If you were sitting at a table having a discussion about ANYTHING AT ALL, EVERYONE at the table would voice their opinions about just about any topic being discussed.

I can just picture someone saying that they want to have a discussion about politics but they only want to hear positive comments about OBAMA. No negative comments allowed. That is not a discussion. It's brain washing.

End of show suggestion. I don't think Bruce would sing it unless we could convince him that there was a bootleg Bruce Springsteen version of it floating around somewhere, you know like that lost recording session where he covered Sugar Sugar by the Archies.

Can we have a quick moment of sympathy for poor, dejected and persecuted Bruce who isn't allowed to state his opinion? Oh wait that's right he was allowed to, and when he did it sounding like a jerk, he generated others posting their opinions.

Dude, you're like the Dixie Chicks, you step outside the context of the moment, express an opinion that's not popular, you do it in a way that comes off as being a complete jerk and then when you receive reaction that's negative you play the victim who's free speech right to express his opinion is somehow being trampled. What neither you nor the chicks get is that while you have a right to express your opinions you don't have a right for people to like them or how you expressed them and everyone else has a right to express their opinion about your views and the tone in which you expressed them.

You're not a victim here pal, you picked the battle. You chose to go off topic and do so in a way that paints you as a major D/B (I'm not the only one who thought so, so gee is it just me or is it you) so you have nothing to cry about now.

<------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->
Now back to the OT, Earl, despite the constant off topic shoves, I hop you got the information you were looking for and that the folks here who actually had a desire to be helpful gave you some new ideas.

I was going to do a group sing last night at the end of the show, but seems like everyone got tired and left at 12:30. I went from 17 singers down to 3 in about 10 minutes. So very odd at this place, but I honestly think they were simply "tired". I was thinking of trying some of the ones that Earl has already tried, but didn't get the chance. Better luck next week I suppose :)
