The bar I just started at does not have a facebook account. So, I started one for it. I wanted to get the bartenders involved and get them on my side to help me promote karaoke. Here is a summary of a powerpoint presentation I made. I am presenting this at an employee meeting on Thursday.

I was wondering if I could get some reviews on this and let me know if I missed something, or if I am wrong about something, or any other ideas that you may have.

Thanks - and here ya go.

What is Facebook?
Facebook is a social NETWORK service that allows users to keep in constant contact with one another by:
• Status Posts – where users tell each other what they are doing or what is on their mind
• Messaging – email-like service that has replaced traditional email for many users
• Chat – this function allows for real-time chat with others
• Media – like pictures, videos, etc
Networking is important in business
• It promotes a mutually beneficial relationship

Networking is just important to bars and bartenders as it is to big business
• It creates a rapport with customers
• Many patrons come in alone, so “knowing” someone could convince them to come in more often
• It also conveys how you can benefit them when you advertise bar specials or events
• When a patron feels as if they have a rapport with a bartender, they are more likely to tip better!
As a business, your presence on facebook is almost a requirement.
• Your message reaches people who are the most likely to respond
• It is FREE
• It also fosters a rapport with customers that is essential in any business
As an individual who’s pay depends primarily on the number of customers served, facebook is just as important!
• You can’t rely on the bar to build your clientele. You have to take your own action.
• In building clientele, facebook makes that happen much faster.
• The cost and effort required to gain one regular is not near as much as maintaining existing clientele. Facebook can help you gain repeat business.

Why is this important to ME?
• Marketing is a key component of almost any business
• Having this system in place just one essential part of karaoke surviving
• Karaoke is my job. It is important to me that it survives.
• If it does survive, it must be successful
• If it IS successful, that means YOU are successful

How to use facebook effectively
• There are rules of ettiquete that should be adhered to
• Failure to follow these rules will result in you being “hidden”
“Hidden” means that you will no longer be seen in the news/status stream

What are some simple rules?
• Don’t discuss politics or religion unless you are sure that the vast majority will agree with your stance. Even so, it is best to avoid these topics altogether if you rely on your facebook for business purposes
• Don’t always SELL something. You get annoying when all you do is “sell” the fact that you are bartending tonight. Change it up often.
• Don’t use your “business” account for games like FarmVille or Mafia Wars. These posts in the news stream are a nuisance to people who do not play them.
• Don’t use your “business” account for other applications like horroscopes, unlocking questions, etc. These applications not only put nuisance information in the news stream of your friends, some also act as viruses and will infiltrate your friends list.
• Don’t overpost!
What is a “business” account?
• A business account in this context is your facebook account that you rely on to promote YOU.
• It can be The Alibi’s business page or YOUR personal page.
• If you must take part in games or applications, create a different account for this purpose and befriend only the people from your friends list that play these games.
What should you share?
• Share your status that you are going on shift, what the drink specials are, and what might be going on.
• To soften the sales pitch, be sure to mention the fact that you will be there “ME”.
• Use words like “come visit me”, “Come hang out with me” or “Come see me”
• Pictures!
Examples of GREAT pictures to share
• You and a customer, especially a facebook friend (Be sure to tag them)
• A crazy moment, like a beer chugging contest, a funny outfit, a singer on stage, etc
• Groups of friends (tag them if possible).

Why is it important to “tag” photos?
• Most people love to have their picture taken OR
• Most people want more pictures on their facebook
• Friends of the tagged person can also see the picture
• These other friends now have awareness of the bar itself
• They might see a friend having a good time and therefore associate a good time with the bar

Be careful with pictures!
• Don’t post “bad” pictures, only post the good ones
• Don’t capture someone getting sick, naked or that is obviously intoxicated and post it unless you know them very good and you are sure they won’t mind it being seen on facebook
• If you aren’t sure, send them the picture and leave it to them whether or not they want it posted.
• Better to be safe than sorry!

Tagging Friends in Posts
• Tagging someone or a business is a very effective way to get your message to the most people.
• Be careful of tagging people with information that might not want to be publicly displayed
Examples of BAD posts:
• “@Troy Vanderstelt just lost $200 in keno! Ouch!”
• “@Toni Fisher is here and she is CROCKED!”
• “@Joe Blow just left here with Jane Doe”
Examples of GOOD posts:
• “I am working tonight at @The Alibi from 4-close. We have 22 ozers of Miller Lite on special for $2. My friends @Jane Doe and @Joe Blow are coming to see me tonight. I am so excited!
• “Tonight, yours truly will be bartending at @The Alibi from 4 until close. Its happy hour all night long. Stop on out - @Joe Blow and @Jane Doe said they were coming to see me, you should, too!
• We have some really good singers tonight at @The Alibi! @Joe Blow just blew away some Journey, and @Jane Doe just NAILED some Patsy Cline. (Notice you didn’t sell anything, just a compliment)
In summary:
• Facebook is considered to be the most effective social marketing tool out there.
• Social marketing is the easiest and most cost efficient way of marketing small businesses
• Use a great deal of discretion in your facebook activities to maximize your outreach
• Don’t over post, don’t only sell things, and use discretion when you tag your friends

You work at a bar that has employee meetings and powerpoint presentations?

Do you work at a chain restaurant?

Holy schniekies!

The closest my bar get to an employee meeting is the 45 minutes after the doors close when we have a beer together.

The closest my bar gets to a powerpoint presentation is when I put embarassing pictures of the door guy on the big screen!

Seriously, through. I "manage" the facebook account of my bar as well. We basically use it to update the specials, announce special nites, and generally get the word out to the fan peeps when anything new or exciting is going on. Oh, and to post embarrassing pictures.

Best of luck in your presentation!

Thanks. And the meeting was called at my request. I put out this to the owner and they got right behind me and are trying to get everyone there:

Are you on facebook?

Having a facebook account can improve overall sales, traffic, and tips. Everybody wins when social media is used to promote what is happening at your bar!

When the bar maintains a facebook account, it can accumulate hundreds of contacts, and thus becomes a source of FREE advertising, targeted directly at the people who are most likely to respond!

When the individual bartender maintains a facebook account, they can tell their friends and contacts that they are working and what might be going on at the bar. This will increase the bartender’s clientele.

On Thursday, January 20th at 7PM, I will be holding a facebook event at The Alibi. Anybody that would like information on how facebook works or how it can be effectively used to increase clientele should stop out. If you don’t have a facebook account, I will be happy to set one up for you.

You don’t need a computer to use facebook! If you have internet on your phone, you can effectively set up and manage a facebook account.

Don’t miss out!

If you already have a facebook account, look for The Alibi and Fisher’s Pub and “like” them.

Step number one.

Make sure you set it up as a BUSINESS, not a PERSON. It's a different setup link, and not always easy to find. The difference is huge. The biz account gets you all kinds of stats, ability to delegate tasks to others, and other handy tools. PLUS you don't have to approve each and every friend as they just "LIKE" you.

So many business setup their first account as a personal account and it quickly becomes unmanageable and forgotten.

It's The Alibi. The owner's son gave fb a well intentioned start, but never followed through. I'm on it!

As far as Fisher's Pub, a fb page was never started.
