Arrrgh.
My beta87a is gold. Both of them.
The fake came in a 8.5" pouch.
The works only with phantom power pouch looks about a foot long.

Jerry out of curiosity are the weight of both about the same or is the real one obviously heavier?
Also the cartridge in the 87A should be about the size of a dime and the brass shield on the top of the cart shold have a six point star design with 13 holes.
The Beta 58A cartridge has a very obvious "SHURE" in raised letters on a dime sized plastic dome in the center of it!
Another point... if you shine a light down inside the recess where the XLR pins are you will see a clearly embossed "SHURE" on the pin carrier (housing)!

The pictures enlarge.
The weight is the same.
The length the same.
I don't have a brass shield.
Both infact are silver.

Actually there is a very clear color difference between the two in your photo! The one on the right has a darker shade to it than the one on the left.

That is just flash photography.
To the naked eye there is no difference
Except where the winshield screws on.
Have you ever tried it without phantom power?
I have not heard of any that work without it.

I will work for about 45 seconds after the phantom power is cut but slowly dies out to nothing.
From all appearances the two are the same (except for color all the pictures you took show each mic with a different shade) Both from outward appearance have electic condenser heads. The one thing I did notice is the one on the right appears to have the threads machined to the body where the one on the left (and mine) appear to have the body machined and painted and then the threading is inserted either pressed or glued into the body.
I know mine are the real deal because there were no fakes on the market when mine were purchased and they came directly from a Shure dealer. I have another Beta 87 that was the first release which has a much slimmer body but it's construction is much the same as the 87A.

So as not to link to another forum I have copy pasted the following.
I bold a part to take notice of.
I can not say that the following is gospel.
Ok I tear these down all the time and am real good at this. so here is the deal, on how to spot a fake of a SM58 and a BETA 58a....But before I tell you I'm not giving away all the secrets SHure does not want that, becuase the cloners will only get better. and second, just so you know .....the SM58 will be heavier than a Beta. They are are built totally different, so dont use a SM58 to Judge a 58 beta. DUH! Ok how to know a Beta 58 fake from the real deal. most the fakes will not have the DC stamp on them in the center of the top of the element or any stamp and they are in white right near the Shure symbol. the real ones will. its where they are inpected and sold out of. And it can have all kinds of states not just DC. but a sure thing is the wiring at the gold XLR, the wires at the gold XLR are red and blue on a real one, and have a heat shrink around the wires where they connect which is black. 9note if on either of the 58 beta or sm58 it has a sticker saying do not open void of warranty or made in mexico in shiney chrome. its a fake!) Now to the SM58... the knock off SM58 is very easy to tell. it has a greyish color next to a more blackish SM58. and the fake is lighter in weight compaired to a real one. But also the sure sign it is a fake, now get this, cause this is funny, the wires to the XLR are red and blue on the real one and green and yellow on a fake. whats funny about that is this a sm58's transformer is hot glued into the handle. the wires that go up are red and blue the wires that come out of the transformer are yellow and green. The fake SM58 on the other hand, has a fake transformer no lie! and the wires go right past it and straight to the XLR But back to the comment on the sounding great. The one guy says his knock offs sound great. actually depending on where you may be using them they might so ok. But the real trick is do they feedback alot. And when you are moving it around in your hand or stand, do you hear it? Fakes on the both 58's a have alot of handling noise. and if you get near a monitor wrong they will feedback. The real ones are way more forgiving. OK final way to tell!!!! But if you just want to know for sure it is real here is a sure thing. go to shure.com with pictures of the mic, on top, at the bottom, and the box if you have it and the stuff it comes with. When you get to shure.com go to ask a question, (sign up its free and easy). And ask if this is a fake and post the pics. Ron Wallace who is a expert will tell you within about an hour or so. That is his job. He will not tell you how he knows, but he will tell you. The reason is he doesnt want them getting better at cloning them. But just so you know, Him in conjuction with Ebay stop over 2000 a month of fakes and clones on ebay alone! and dont get half of them. SO best bet buy from a dealer authorized to sell them. I buy all my mics from a authorized shure dealer and convert them to fit in a 55. check them out at Mutantmics.com

I did. Until I get a replacement it holds it in place.
Sort of.
Has the handling noise of a jumbo jet.

Maybe it's just bad eyes on my part but the XLR pins on neither the 58A nor the 87A appear to be gold of course I haven't pulled then either!

THIS is the only way to go. Any pawnshop/ebay/craigs list mic has a large chance of being a fake.

No. Do you think he could handle it?
The label fell off.
In view of the whole pirate thing
Do you guys feel it would be worth having a way
of helping us recognise what is genuine.
When I see copies of Crown, QSC, JBL, Shure etc.
I do find things a bit disturbing.
The world is full of greedy people who will flood the market.
Strangely didn't see any Nady fakes.
Even I am going to get a pair of them.
Fantastic drunk mic's.
