I've mixed live broadcast situations and they are difficult. Obviously House, Monitors and Broadcast are all separate in a situation like that. What I'd like to know is what kept them from having the backing music in the TV mix directly. It seemed pretty clear that ambient mics were the only way that the backing music was finding it's way into the mix and that was part of the issue. As far as Fergie's mic, I don't know how anyone could have not noticed that. Unfortunately for the engineer, that's one of those "Oh Sh!t" embarrassing moments that just happens, especially when you're in a hurried environment.

As difficult as live broadcast can be, don't discount the amount of prep time these guys have too. Remember, whether or not they took advantage of it, these guys had the better portion of two weeks to iron a lot of this out and plenty of time for sound checks and what not. Unfortunately, I think the biggest errors were related to input selection which can't be fixed once the show is rolling. Too bad.

No wonder Aguilera forgot the lyrics -- it took about a minute per syllable for her to try to sing the anthem. It wasn't artistic, it wasn't tasteful and it didn't honor America - it just kept screaming, "I know I'm a vocal superstar and you should think my version is better than the original" and the bottom line was it SUCKED.

Exactly. The best sound engineer in the world would not have helped.

I will admit here that I am familiar with the people who did the sound but am not at liberty to give names. I want him to remain a friend...ugggg. However, I may ask him what the hexx happened.

In defense of your friend, if he was FOH and monitors, then he may have had absolutely no influence on what went out for the TV audio. There's a reason sound guys refer to "vidiots," ya know.

True. He has done monitors for the best ... and had been there for a week and a half before. We'll never know what it sounded like there I guess.

That's exactly what I said to my friends at the party when they said "They are all just shouting!". It's all dry mic! Just a crappy, crappy mix. It could have sounded so much better, but now all people will remember is "The Black Eyed Peas Sucked", even though it really wasn't their fault.

Looking back, shortly after the beginning of the Gulf War, Whitney Houston’s electrifying 1991 SBowl performance of the national anthem is still considered one of the best, if not THE BEST. Powerful voice & delivered with prayer-like sincerity, truly amazing!

It was Whitney at her best. Then, a year later she met Bobby Brown....

My wife was just mentioning her performance as the best ever this morning. I didn't remember it, but that was absolutely brilliant, thank you for posting it.

Why can't these people just get up and sing The National Anthem straight and simple... the way it is always done at any other type of event or gathering? All this added vibrato and what-not justs ruins it (IMO).
