I'm reluctant to buy the Gem series after reading about the agreement and all of the contract stipulations. I'm really not interested in leasing discs, I'd much rather buy them and own them. This isn't a LEGAL discussion-it's a question about the price.

What do y'all think about the price and is there a better deal out there?

I'd really like to be a Karaoke host, but I'd like to do it with a decent sized collection. I've seen some collections of POP HITS Monthly too and if I buy them - Soundchoice(mentioned above)+POP HITS Monthly+SUPERCORE+Sweet Georgia Brown+Chartbusters 1-5+misc Legends+DK, I'm thinking I might have a decent enough selection do do a decent show.

I'm 52 and who knows how many more years I'll be interested in doing this? With owning my discs and my gear etc. if I decide to sell everything to someone and retire it will be a simple straightforward transaction. Original, bonafide, genuine physical media is easy to transfer to someone else.

The Foundations/Bricks is great starter set. $1300 sounds about right. Then just add some CB 50 packs for filling in the holes and youve got a good start.

For the same price or close to it you can get all 10 of the Chartbuster Essentials and if you are digital you can get them on an SD card in MP3+G format.

4500 unduplicated songs.

If starting from scratch, my first choice would be the GEM series for a much lower cost per cut and a large, instant catalog of the "best-of-breed". As a GEM owner, I can tell you it has been simple & painless. Don't get too hung up on the "Own v/s Rent" angle. Business lease/license things all the time for the cost savings. Plus, either way you have use of the songs for as long as you like and that is really what matters. Now if you DO plan on selling your business some time in the future, then perhaps that would be a hitch. I don't, so that was no concern of mine. Should I stop my business, I will always have a private Karaoke lounge in my basement. :-)

BUT, just like leasing a car or condo, they certainly aren't for everybody. My second choice would definitely be the Foundations/Bricks. Not as many selections, but excellent nonetheless. Check out Karaoke.com. They often have discount coupon codes that would save you a bundle on the entire set.

I also agree with Danny that the full CB essentials set is also an excellent deal.

I would reconsider the Bricks. Out of all 5 Bricks, I think "I Love Rock & Roll" is the only song that is sang at my shows. I do cater to a slightly younger crowd at my shows, but even so, if I had to do it all over again, I would not buy the Bricks.

Even Foundation 1 is somewhat out of date for my shows. The vast majority of SC songs that get sang come from my Foundation 2.

Quite the opposite at my shows, many of the Bricks get used nightly - see discussion about 'must have's' - a disc that is hot in one club may never get touched at a club next door. Our avg age group is 20-30, now out of the discs, the rock ones get done more often than the country, but unfortunately you cannot separate them.

The price is about right for both Foundations & all the Bricks.

I guess I would be curious as to what people would sing off from the Bricks. Maybe Ring of Fire would be another. I could maybe come up with a few other songs, but definitely somewhat rare for this neck of the woods. Since I have duplicates (and so will he), I would rather have saved the money!

In fact, maybe I will put my Bricks up for sale.

I can't think of songs exactly but I also think that maybe 20 -25 songs get sang off these discs.

Well, as I said, my shows are a bit different. I encourage singers to sing new songs and strongly discourage depressing music after 11PM most nights.

I am really surprised to hear that so many songs are sang from the Brick series, but it could be the geographic differences.

Even if you are saying there really are 20-25 songs from THE BRICKS, I'd rather spend $150 on a 10 SC disks for most of these songs versus hundreds for the whole set.

The five bricks comes to around $500. The Foundations are around $350 each.

Looking at the differences between the two if I had had the option of the GEM series when I started I would have gone with the GEMs over the Foundations Bricks and all the single spotlight disc, ended up with a lot of repeat songs that way for a lot more money than the GEM series cost.

As far and the lease thing goes I wouldn't see it as a deterrent, as it appears to me to be a perfect business choice. When it comes time to sell it if you so choose then I don't think there would be a real problem if you readwhat SC says on the subject, you simply reregister the product from one person to the next and it is a done deal.
