Well I'm sure sorry to hear you hate me. I have a pair of Mackie powered 15" subs (SRS 1500's) and a JBL 18" Sub (G718) that I use for Karaoke. However, I have to admit I don't use them all that often. Some of the places I work in, there's just no room to put them. In all but a very select few venues I've played, I can get away without them just fine and would be willing to put my rig, sans sub, up against anyones. The Mackie S215's that I have kick butt on the low end. The 15" drivers in those are almost identical to the 15's in the SRS 1500's. I've not had much problem getting enough low end out of them. A strategically placed HPF at 45Hz makes sure I don't send them anything they can't reproduce.
Honestly, if I don't need them, I don't use them. They take up a ton more space and require additional setup time. While the purist in me would prefer to have them, it doesn't always make logical or logistical sense.

Bar gigs and private parties go hand in hand, you can't separate them! they FEED each other. I good bar gig will net you $600 to $800 A MONTH! One gig. So how many private parties does that equate to? Three? Four? An unsteady possibility versus an assured income, at a set price. Private parties are no different then bar gigs. There's always some guy ready to undercut your price. You quote $300 the customer goes back to the other guy, "Well he quoted me $300, what will you give me?" and of course the guy will say $250 (or less!!!) and get the gig. CONFUSION set in for me....
You get $600-$800 /month for one gig at a bar? I assume you mean that is for 4 show for the month so figure $175 per show.
I get anyway from $300-$1500 for private parties.
If I get one wedding reception a month (usually more), that averages to be $800 for about 6 hours of work.
Or I can try to get bar gigs for $200/nite for 4 hours and end having to work EVERY WEEKEND for a total of 16 hours for the same amount of pay.
I will contend that you do get private parties from bar gigs, but that goes away. I might get 1or2 private parties from bar gigs, the rest are actual word of mouth, they have attended one of the parties I worked, or from advertising/www.
