Well, I thought I had been to some bad shows, but a recent experience took the cake. I went out singing with my wife and brother, and I walk in and the KJ is setting up, I ask a couple questions, first being "what kind of speakers you got" I got a dumb look and a point..."those ones" then her husband came in and explained what kind they were, so I could accept that, figuring he was the "techie" of the pair. I look through their book and the selection wasn't great, but I found a couple songs I would like to sing, (nothing I have done before, I like to try out new things) Then the singing started. KJ wife sings the first song, which I was cool with as it gives them a chance for a sound check. The next guy to come up and sing is an Autistic fellow with a terrible sounding rendition of a country song (but he was belting it out, and having a blast which I thought was awesome) The next singer comes up and halfway through her song the KJ annouces a birthday in the crowd (ive heard KJ's do that before on songs with longer instrumental breaks, but he did in MID VERSE) My wife sings next, and after her song the KJ announces, over the mike, that she did an awesome job, and that "It sucks that this place usually doesn't have good singers" I sing, and throughout my song the KJ is messing with his system, shutting my mike off 3 times during the song. A couple more singers come up, and then he starts playing some dance music, for 40 minutes. He comes up and is chatting with me about how these "bar gigs" are worthless and that he can't wait til summertime so he can do some weddings.
The second rotation comes up (its been 25 mins of singing, 40 mins of dance music that wasn't even good, no one was dancing, and then about 10 mins of dead air) and again KJ wife starts it out. Autistic guy again (which was the only redeeming factor of the night, it was great to see a guy having so much fun) and then KJ sings, then his wife does another one because it was a "special request" then my wife again, (and the KJ started singing along with her, so she just set the mike down and walked away. My brother who is kinda shy and just turned 21 goes up to sing, and I figure we can hang out long enough for him to sing. He is doing awesome, and then the KJ starts talking again in the middle of his song, as he is trying to sing. I was super pissed, and when he was done singing I made a point to ask the KJ what venues he plays at, so I can make sure I don't attend them.
If this is my competition, I am not scared at all. I learned alot about how to KJ tonight though. Just take everything they did, and do the complete opposite.
sorry for the rant.

He's probably working for fifty bucks a night and beer and that is why no matter how much money you spend on equipment and tunes, he will be booked and you will not. I've seen this or worse (okay, maybe I haven't seen worse) many times. When the venue owner thinks of karaoke he's going to remember this guy.

humourously enough, the bar manager made a comment about having a hard time finding entertainment during the summer as their "KJ" only works bars during the winter. so I may have a job opportunity there.

Kinda makes you wonder what goes through a guys mind when he is doing that....I mean sheesh....right in the middle of someones song! Amazing that he sees nothing wrong with that. You just don't do that sort of stuff.

The karaoke up the street from me on Wednesdays used to do good even though there were no books (just piles of paper) because the host was wild.
He moved away, and two girls took it over.
At first it seemed better because they at least had books. But the house has old old old Peavey speakers with a mixer/amp box, which sound horrible. They're running off a netbook, and somehow using Windows media player for the karaoke, without extended desktop so they had to lean way over to look at the monitor when adjusting the size of the lyric window.
They obnoxiously play favorites, then one speaker wasn't working, and the one that WAS working, the tweeter was broken.

I've seen shows like that.. it's a classic case of a guy and his wife who like to sing karaoke, and figure, "Hey.. we're spend $50 to $75 a night going to OTHER peoples gigs, why not get into the karaoke biz, get PAID $50 to $75 a night PLUS get free beer?!"
Most of the best KJ's i've seen were NOT singers at all.
Making announcements right over someones vocals is just plain rude. Talking in the middle of someones song, even during 'instrumental' parts of the song is even, in my opinion, pretty sloppy.

Aren't you all being a little judgemental about this guy since it was only one show reveiwed!
Just think about how he is going to feel if he happens across this forum and realizes that you guys are talking about him. He is going to get angry and start lashing out isn't he?
And Toger you of all people with your "higher standards" should be ashamed! I believe we should limit this site to discussions of equipment, new technology and other things that are designed to improve the general business welfare of karaoke.
I think this thread should be closed since it is nothing more than trolling for some guy who may or may not be a member here!

KJs like that are the ones that think that the customers are actually coming to the bar to hear the KJs sing all night. Egomaniacs to the extreme. They really have no clue that people are unhappy about the way they run their show.

I saw the worst karaoke show ever and it would be very hard to believe that ANYONE could be worse than this guy...
His equipment sucked. He was running a JB199 that hung halfway out of his "rack". His "rack" was just a box that he set on the floor and and to bend way over just to punch in songs. Carpet was peeling off 6-12" at every corner. His speakers - I didn't even recognize the name of them.
He started the show off. He was the WORST KJ singer I have ever seen (by far). I was looking for a song while he was singing - which was difficult. I did find something, went up there and his mics were so loaded with effects (the long looping kind) that I could not even understand the words I was singing. And his volume - you couldn't hear karaoke unless you were within 20' of the stage.
I didn't want to sing anymore, and nobody else was singing, so he sang a couple songs and finally gave up, much to the enjoyment of the patrons. He started playing a couple songs - can't screw that up - right? His songs were obviously pirated - they had radio station sweeps at the beginning of the song (like "Kickin' Country 107, Your Source For Today's Best Country Music")
I went to the bar to get a drink and a group of people were complaining. One of the complaints I heard was that a guy went up and asked him to play some Pantera. The KJ did not even know who Pantera was! Now, I probably wouldn't have played Pantera unless I felt it was the appropriate time and place, but at least I know who Pantera is!
The purpose of my visit was to drop off marketing material that was requested from the bar owner. Needless to say, I got the gig the very next week.

None of these are the worst. I have been to hundreds of karaoke gigs all over the country, and while what is stated would rank among the worst 15%, you have to see some to believe them. I saw one advertised karaoke that was a Magic Microphone. I have seen $29.00 on-sale karaoke machines, again advertised in an entertainment paper. I almost don't count those.
The worst I ever saw was a host who would sing 3 songs, then let a singer sing one, then sing 3 songs, then let a singer sing one....neither he nor his equipment were much, and as I was the third singer in line I didn't actually get to use it. I left.
The worst frequent type of show for me is the one that states a start time of 9pm, but if you arrive there at that time you cool your heels for an hour because "I want to wait for some singers".

Have to agree with the last statement. It's like this "Hello I'm a singer." I've left shows like this a half hour after the host stated that he is waiting for singers and never gone back except to take his gig. New advertised start time would be when the singers do show at his show.

I understand that you are unhappy with your thread being locked but this response is not relevant. I did read your thread before it was locked and from what I understood, you pirated music and that is not legal and it really gives a lot of KJ's a bad reputation, even those of us who do pay for our music.

so the guy cuts you out of your song three times, and then later chats you up on how bar karaoke gigs are worthless. Maybe he should try comedy instead.
I think my next song would have been You Give Karaoke a Bad Name

@Virgin Karaoke
I hope the guy sees this and knows it is about him, maybe it will encourage him to make his show better. I could see this as a lockable thread if I was to put his name or something up there, but I didn't do that for that very reason. Now if he does see it and knows it is about him, but no one else (but me) knows it is about him, I don't see the problem. And as far as only reviewing one show, thats all it takes. If it was bad equipment, I could understand, sometimes equipment messes up during a show. However, poor behavior on the KJ's part doesn't just happen randomly.
