Got a call yesterday afternoon, was home relaxing after turning down a ride 4 hours away to watch my buddy DJ another buddy's hometown party. "Can you fill in for a DJ who ditched me?"

Yep, karaoke? Yep. Karaoke/DJ? Yep.

20 minutes out of town. Did a gig there last winter. This is the one bar in Iowa that had figured out how to allow smoking and still is doing it. Turned out to a great gig. Yada yada, by the end of the night the owner had taken the mic from me and asked the crowd if they wanted me on a regular basis (twice a month on Fridays) and thanking me over and over for filling in, everyone coming up and offering drinks and help. Was a great time!

Whats my point? This is why I'm in the business! I stayed an hour longer than I had to.

Congrats. Just goes to show how being available at the right time can work out for you.

On a related note.. two fridays a month.. have you done a 'every other friday' kind of gig before?

I had never done a bi-monthly show before until recently.. and my regulars find it confusing and difficult to remember.. is this the week he's there, or is it next week?

I keep most of my regulars cell phone numbers in my phone and text them where i'm at each night, but it leaves the less than tech savvy patrons out of the loop.

Just make it the 2nd and last fridays of the month or the 1st and 3rd ..if your singers can't figure it out by that ..get smarter singers LOL

Cheese brings up an important point. The best way to deal with it if you are going to do a bi-weekly gig is make sure that you and the bar do a good job of communicating when you'll be there. When you go in on a Friday night, make sure they have posters up that night advertising your next date there. If you don't already, setup a mailing list and get names and emails from the folks at that bar and send out a reminder days in advance of your next Friday there.

You can make it work but it is harder. Just make sure both you and the bar are doing the right things to get word out there for when you'll be back.

Good point.

Actually a few of the singers are going to request that they do it every Friday. I plan on using facebook to let them know my dates.
