Yeah that is one of the three songs I know. Knowing so little Manilow songs is a benefit because they get old fast.

This will be the rare occasion i'll let songs play out in their entirety just to kind of fill time. Still will not play any regular music in lieu of singers. If I have even 1 singer, you sing at least every other song!
I have one host that will threaten (and has done) to sing tv theme songs until someone puts a song in. He said he only had to do this once however but got several singers just to shut him up

I will wait until there are a few singers before I start and play DJ music until then. I am there to entertain. If most of the bar is filled with non-singers, they really don't want to hear Joe Blow singing seven songs. Or me for that matter. Soon enough I get to a very large rotation (sometimes close to 30), but in the meantime, my aim is to keep as many of the people in the bar happy as possible. If one person has their underwear in a bunch because they don't get to be the exclusive star for 1/2 hour, then so be it. I understand their desire to sing as many as they can, but my customer is the bar, not the singer. In the meantime, maybe I'll schmooze a little with the singer, and try to get other people to sign up.

If you advertise DJ/Karaoke, I would be forewarned and not show up. If you advertise karaoke at 9pm and then don't start until 9:45, making me cool my heels for that time, I consider it dishonest.

Great point. If someone gives me a songslip before the time, they sing right away after my sound check.

And not only that, it's a self-fulfilling prophecy. If singers know they won't get to sing if they show up early, they won't show up early.

If you advertise DJ/Karaoke.
I think i've only seen this advertised once. Otherwise everyone that advertises 'karaoke' thinks no one will mind dj music.

I wait until I have at least one other singer. Then I ask the singer if they want to sing or wait for others to arrive. If they want to sing right away, we do, and and I will switch off with them.
In such a case, I also encourage them to try new songs, since no one is there to criticize or witness a "crash and burn" .
But sometimes they want a crowd to sing their songs to, not an empty bar, in which case, I will wait for at least one other singer to arrive, but I give them the choice. Seems to work, and early singers are happy and continue to come early since they aren't shut down right off the bat.
