The minute I saw this thread it immediately caught my attention cause I’m a big fan of American Idol & Randy Jackson.
I really don’t have any karaoke experience to speak of & I just sing to have fun, so I brought this to the attention of somebody who is a professional singer & could bring a valid opinion… of course I’m talking bout my husband Steven & his feelings are this…

That the word “karaoke” is stereotypical to just average singers & not “label quality” which is absolutely false of course but from a generic perspective & from Randy’s point, he’s putting karaoke in the same category as bar band, lounge act, cruise ship, ect., which as we all know have some excellent performers but not be Celin Dion blow your mind factor on a typical basis. I would assume Randy doesn’t spend a whole lotta time in karaoke bars & is just speaking generically. The other meaning for “karaoke” is sounding exactly like the original which is fine for the SS stage, cruise ship, bar band, ect., but I’m in total agreement with him if your goal is to be an original artist.

In watching the show for the past 10 years I’ve had many disagreements with Randy’s opinion, but so far this year I think he’s been spot on. I also think Steven Tyler is the coolest thing that ever hit A/I & brings a lil’ bit more of the Rock influence to a pop television show. The other significant difference from years past, is the talent caliber with the current top 13 who are outstanding… personally I have never been too impressed since Kelly Clarkson, but these new kids are awesome!

As far as A/I using recorded tracks in the beginning, I believe they did but then found it better to bring in live musicians to be able to allow the kids the ability to make their own arrangements to avoid “the karaoke sound.” The show is bout singing & not playing so I’m really not concerned bout seeing the band & they do have a kick a** band that comes up with some serious original arrangements!

In summarizing, I think Randy is just portraying to be a lil’ naïve saying that there aren’t great talents all over the world that are currently in karaoke bars & yet could sell a million albums overnight… but I also think he’s making that reference for a purpose directed to young talent striving to be original artists & prolly knows himself that there are brilliant singers in karaoke bars or playing in local bands or singing in the shower, but only using that word as a reference.

That’s my humble opinion, (Steven John)

My interpretation of the comments about the comparison to Karaoke is that what he's saying is if it's "Karaoke," it's a mimic of the original artist, which, let's face it, most Karaoke singers do exactly just that. I know I do. 99% of my singers over the last 15 years have. It's the difference between having a good voice and singing something well or turning a song into something that uniquely embodies the person who's singing it. Most people who sing Karaoke do the former. There are definitely exceptions, and I'm sure, as others here are, that most of the singers on that show have regularly sung Karaoke. After all, if you love to sing, you do it at every opportunity. But I don't disagree that most Karaoke singers try to sing like the artist, and "in the style of..." That doesn't make them bad. It just makes them poorly suited to be on that show.

Other than that, I wouldn't get my underwear in a bunch about the comparison.

""""Randy told Clint Jun Gamboa that no karaoke singer in the world has that kind of vocal talent.""""

No where in the statement does it say "you shouldn't try to sing it like the original artist or recording"

It was an ignorant statement, let's leave it at that.

Until AI lets singers of all ages compete, I won't watch. My choice, my opinion and that's the way it is.

Yup. If she was in the USA, Susan Boyle would never have made it on American Idol and been discovered. She would have been rejected outright for her appearance & age.

There is a lot of talent to be found at Karaoke shows, some karaoke singers go on to be singers in bands (I have had at least three) there are some people who sing in bands (that simply suck) and shouldn't be allowed on a karaoke stage to butcher a song.

I havew seen national recording artist sing karaoke and have a load of fun with it some singing their own songs and some singing songs that other artist made famous. I have a kid (17) named Cody who joined a band last year as the lead, his band is opening for a national act in Richmond next month.

I would wager that all of the singers who apply to AI are or have been karaoke singers!

That's happening now.... Simon's new show called X Factor.... Auditions are upcoming in Newark, NJ next month.

http://thexfactor.blogs.fox.com/

And no.... I am not going to audition. I wouldn't stand a chance against the talent that I've seen out there.

I don't think that Randy gets a cut of the AI Karaoke cdgs, or is he irate that a filipino karaoke singer is a frontman of a band that he was on? Also I wonder how he feels about Tribute/ Cover bands?

You guys are a trip.

Randy Jackson has played and/or worked with the Divinyls, Carlos Santana, Jerry Garcia, Aldo Nova, Blue Öyster Cult, Jon Bon Jovi, Michael Bolton, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Billy Cobham, Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, Céline Dion, Fergie, Stryper, Whitesnake, Herbie Hancock, Ernie Isley, Billy Joel, Brent Bourgeois, Journey, Richard Marx, George Michael, Stevie Nicks, Imogen Heap, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Tracy Chapman, and Roger Waters.

Not to mention is a Grammy winning producer.

But he doesn't know what he's talking about. He doesn't have a clue.

I'm sure his comments are generalizations.. sure there are really excellent karaoke singers out there.. with the stuff to be real entertainers.. with the chops to be the next Whitney Houston.. but most are just karaoke singers.

Probably 99.8%.

If susan Boyle auditioned for Britain's version of Idol, yes, for those same reasons she wouldn't have made it. However, If she appered on America's Got Talent as she did on Britain's Got Talent, I believe the outcome would have been similar.

American Idol is for the next up and Pop/Rock/Country/R&B/etc, Star who will potentially sell to the younger audiences. Younger audiences buy less music from older artists. The "XXXX's Got Talent" is the venue for us older folk. Maybe even that new Simon Cowel production "X Factor"

Yes, he's to be derided for the way he (and Simon) disrespect karaoke. There's a bunch of current chart-toppers who got their start singing karaoke and/or backing tracks (Taylor Swift, anyone?).

But, I still gotta give Randy props for laying down the bass line for one of my all-time favorite songs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyfF0vUZJ_E (sorry for the awful video, but at least you can hear the low-end)

Session musician. Good enough to fill in but never to be a "full time" band member. Yep, he doesn't have a clue when it comes to karaoke singers obviously making ignorant statements.
There are obviously more talented singers out there than just the ones AI decides to select. What does AI care what age singers are? How do they know who will sell records? This is American and everyone should be judged on their talent, not their age! Good thing we don't set our rules for the Presidency like AI does! I will continue to boycott the show, I'm not holding out for a change, if they do (highly unlikely) than I will watch. If they don't, no skin off my nose. Go baby boomers!

It's not just Randy Jackson. Simon Cowell used to piss me off all the time with his derogatory comments about karaoke singers.

As for Randy being limited to being a "session" musician, I'd say it's probably because he doesn't "look" the part. He's not your stereotypical thin, shaggy haired, skinny guy with the spandex pants on. But he DOES know his stuff (one of the reasons why he went into producing).

Ross Vallory (bass) and Steve Smith (drums) were fired from Journey because they were uncomfortable playing with "click" tracks. I'm guessing Steve Perry was supporting this idea, hoping to go in a more commercial direction... while Neil Schoen would rather do it "old school;" just jamming with the guys. Probably why they split up.

Yes Randy and Journey. K I S S I N G. Sorry but he was with them after their heyday! I'd give him more credit if they had done soemthing during that 2 year period in the late 80's. Again, session musician. Fat guys can rock, look at Meatloaf!
