Hi im new to this forum and thought id post here.. Last week i did a show and ive been going to the same place for the last 8weeks now. However the last show i did the landladys daughter insaulted me saying i wasnt very good and that she said the music was to loud and she couldnt hear her self sing. So i had to turn down the volume to a point where eveyone looked at her as if to say, why have you turned it down.. after that she did nothing but complain about her song that she couldnt hear her self. come the end of the night she paid me short so i asked her why and she said ive docked your wages cause i didnt think you was very good. But yet i dont charge much for karaoke £90 a night for 5 hours and she didnt wanna pay me some of it. Ive now done an agreement thing they will have to sign in order for me to even unload my stuff. and have now made instructions on how to use the mics lol.. most karaoke's/dj's charge £200+ a night. But there wont be any change from my end and the way i karaoke as everyone else keeps saying how good i am. she was the only one that compained. Every one else who got up an sang you could hear perfectly clear and no i never touched the volume of the mics or music untill she complained. Oh well it will be the same next week. let me know what you guys think about this or if anyone has any ideas how to get around the problem of not gettin paid there full amount.

Three words will solve that for future shows. "Cash in advance."

Contact the owner, calmly and succintly describe the incident and let the owner know that "To avoid more misunderstandings of this nature, I must insist on payment in full before I set up my equipment."

Be ready to walk away if he/she refuses.

Seems that you had a verbal contract for a set amount and you kept your end of the contract so they have to keep theirs. She owes you money and I would insist on payment before I would even consider going into another contract with them.

Bad business practice on their part.

This is where you have to show the backbone, show up for your next show tell them they shorted you from the week before and they need to pay you the money that was shorted as well as the money for this night (go ahead and setup just as you normally would) if by show start time you have not been paid start packing things up and breaking down.

They will either allow you to leave without comment or engage you in conversation. If they allow you to leave without comment just chalk it up to they didn't want you there to begin with, if they engage you explain to them that you make your living from this and they put their hand into your pocket and stole from you, and you can not do business that way, so you now require payment up front instead of at the end of the show.

No matter how it goes be prepared to walk without payment.

I've experienced this from time to time in my years as both a 'band guy' and doing the DJ/KJ thing.. bar owners/managers trying to short you at the end of the night.

I've not ever had one try and short me because they thought I sucked.. it's usually them complaining that they've had a slow night, and want me to give them a break on the rate.

My standard rebuttal to such a thing is, "Well.. you don't pay me extra when you have a great night, so why pay me less when you have a slow night?"

Another good comeback when confronted with the 'slow night' argument is, "So you'll only be paying 75% of the electric bill tonight? When I stop and get gas on the way home, can I tell the guy at the gas station I only have to pay $2 a gallon for gas because I had a slow night? You know what? I'm having a slow night.. I think i'll only pay .50 cents each for my bottles of Becks Dark."

In your case, when they want to pay you less than the agreed amount because 'you suck', i'd ask to speak with the person who hired me or the person above them.

If i'm dealing with the head honcho, then i'd tell them frankly, "If you thought I sucked that bad, well then you can hire someone else for next week.. but tonight, you're paying me my full rate."

Without any contract or performance agreement in place you likely have little to no recourse. Even here in the states, a signed contract or performance agreement is only worth anything if you take them to court, pay the filing fees, represent yourself or hire a lawyer, and then when it's all said and done, all you get (if you win) is a judgement, which you have to go after yourself.. in my opinion, not really worth the hassle for anything less than say $1,000 bucks.

No friend.. your options when confronted with a venue that doesn't want to pay the full rate is to either demand that they do and walk if they don't, or let 'em rodger the snot out of you.

Like I said, over the years i've had a few places try and lowball me.. I generally make a strong argument for my full pay, and then depending on my current weekly schedule, will either tell them to go piss up a rope, or start aggressively looking to re-book that evening and continue playing the venue till I find a replacement.

I had a "new" manager at a venue I had been doing for several years that told me she wasn't going to pay my rate because she could have another KJ in the next week who would charge a third of what I was charging so that was all she would pay, I told her she needed it a lot more than I did and I walked out. Went in the next day and started taking down my system (she didn't know it was mine) She called the police and had me escorted from the building, I guess she talked to the owner and found out who the system belonged to so she took it down and threw it out on the loading dock.

Within a month another "NEW" manager called wanting me to come back!

I wouldn't ever walk from a job without taking all my equipment with me.. for just such a reason.

I suppose if I were just starting out and needed to get my proverbial foot in the door, i'd put up with a lot more abuse from tight wad management types, but i've been doing this a long time.

You want to hire some kid with a laptop for $50, go right ahead. I'll give you the names and numbers of over a dozen that would love to come in here and do the show for $50 and beers.

But the crowd that's in your bar right now is going to go with me to the bar three blocks down that is currently a ghost town, and would love to pay me more than i'm making now to have this crowd.

For every venue out there that wants to nickle and dime me over my rate, there are three that know the difference between having a personality behind the mic, and having some kid spinning tunes off his laptop.

And the crowd knows the difference, too.

Now I suppose if you're just one of these clowns clinging to the belief that simply having a $10,000 sound system, $1,000 a piece mics, and a $40,000 legal SoundChoice library is going to put you in demand.. well.. then you've already lost the game.

Consider that most radio stations have the same kinds of towers, same kind of equipment, same kinds of transmitters, same identical quality of sound.. they all have the same legal library of songs.. but there's always a #1 station in town.. and it's the personality and tone they set that put them on top.

If you have the leverage of talent and a marketable brand, you don't need to fool around with 2 bit nimrod managers or penny pinching owners.

Didn't have much choice because the entire system was installed. It was a four hour job to break it down. Speakers were on wall mount brackets, Subs were screwed into the front of the stage, amps and processing were rack mounted in a closet. It wasn't a matter of just loading it up and leaving.

In my opinion, the professional thing to do in that case is to present a bill for the balance with a note explaining that you did not receive your agreed upon pay and that there is a balance that is due and payable before you will perform again. I've dealt with this issue before and I will not work for a bar that believes that they have the right to pay me whatever they feel in lieu of our agreement.

Signed,

Been There, Done That, And Won't Do It Again.

Hi there guys thanks for all yout replys and I have enjoyed reading them right down to the very last one. Ok so yes I have a laptop, Alesis USB Mulitmix Mixer. X2 "12 Active speakers 600watt each, X2 senchinzer Mics if thats how u spell it. I was truly peed off, I'm off to another pub this weekend and will see if this woman will pay me my going rate.. £90 aint much at all and its almost 2 times less then the most DJ/KJ will charge. I think the girl had a right nurve to even say anything as she was the one singing and blamed me for the reason why couldnt hear her self.. It's called get closer to the MIC and SING LOUDER.. It's what im gonna be telling her in just over a weeks time if they sing my agreement. If not then il just call it a day and find somewhere else.

I get a kick out of jackholes who like to sing at a near whisper, while dramatically holding the microphone ball three feet away from their mouths.. and then complain that they can't hear themselves, or that the mic must not be on.

When that happens, I gesture for them to hand me the mic, and then I say into the mic, "YOU HAVE TO SING INTO THE MIC IF YOU WANT TO HEAR YOURSELF"

I do that exact same thing. Great minds, et all. :P

And as for the OP, I agree with the others. Ask for the money up front and start looking for another bar ASAP.
