I don't know why anyone expects to use the text on the screen to perfectly sync their singing to the original track.

Guide lyrics on the screen are for general reference. If you're singing a song for the first time, you should already have a good idea of how the song goes.

I mean, if you're expecting to walk up and sing a song you've never heard before relying solely on the guide lyrics, you aren't ever going to sound right.. even if the guide lyrics are perfectly sync'ed.

Agreed... However,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, You can't tell me you don't have one song that the lyrics don't change to the next page fast enough and if you don't know the words, then you are off. In this case, what good are the lyrics? Let's just tell singers "don't come to my show until you have your song memorized!"

Also, if you're expecting to walk up and sing a song you've never SUNG before relying solely on the guide lyrics,,,,,,,,,,,,, now our singers have to have sung the song before or they can't come to our show? Seriously, SUNG is the word you should use, not HEARD. And just because you've heard it before, doesn't mean you know, or will remember all the lyrics in the song. So the "guide" needs to be very close to perfect. Compuhost makes it easier with the lyrics changer option to have.

After all, how many times does a singer actually want to sing a song they've never heard before. Probably zero unless someone is asking for help or spurring them on.

Which is smarter? Just sticking to making/selling karaoke, while people all over the world create software FOR FREE that helps you sell it, or trying to compete with them and keeping it a closed loop while you blow your money into an industry (software) that you(the karaoke manu) knows nothing about?

I never said they couldn't come to my show and try and sing a song they've never heard before. What I said is if you try to sing a song you've never heard before based solely on the guide lyrics, no matter how precise the timing, no matter how good a singer you are, it's going to very likely suck.

Most people at least hear the song on the radio.. sing along with it in the car.. and have at least a general idea of how the song goes before attempting to do it on karaoke night.

Never said a person had to have the lyrics memorized before they could come to my show.. most folks DON'T.. but they usually have a general idea of what the words are, and the PHRASING of the song.

Lyrics on the screen are not sheet music, man. If you're relying on the highlight on the screen for your sense of timing, or the lyrics on the screen to explain how the songs phrasing goes, you're probably going to be sh!t out of luck.

What about songs where the pronunciation of a word is altered to make it rhyme with another word? How about relying solely on the guide lyrics to bust out a 50 cent tune?

On the speeding up tunes to squeeze in more songs a night because you're getting paid per song thing.. at least to me, that's the same as watering down drinks to get more pours out of a bottle.

My usual response to the rare "words are too fast" complaint is "You picked a fast song. Fast songs have fast words".

I use the Pacemaker plug-in with Winamp, and have several regulars who often ask for key changes... and a few who may ask to speed up or slow down a song. To me, it's a minor inconvenience, and no big deal.

One thing I don't understand though is, for those of you familiar with Pacemaker, what's the difference between "speed" and "tempo". I've always thought they were the same thing... but apparently not. Otherwise, why would there be both.

Generally speaking, when you speed up a track, it changes the pitch.. too fast and you get that chipmunk effect.

When you increase the tempo of a song, you make the song faster without changing the pitch of the music.

Oh there are several songs i've noticed over the years that don't 'turn the page' fast enough.. from a variety of manus.. mostly because there are a bunch of lyrics and not enough of a pause in the song to make it happen.

In 99.975% of those cases, though.. the singer is familiar enough with the song to handle it. If not, then they miss the first word of the next page of lyrics.

I don't tell people they 'cant come to my show' because of it.. I dunno where you get that or why you keep saying that. Hey, lots of bars I play don't serve Becks Dark or Fat Tire.. I don't tell myself I can't come to my own show because they don't pour the beer I like.

I just deal with it.

In cases where the next page of lyrics don't come up fast enough.. I fail to see how speeding up or slowing down the track is going to help.

Sound Choice is by far the worst as far as flipping screens too slow for fast-worded songs.

The original Sony Karaoke Jukeboxes (that held 60 CDGs) have a tempo change. (shows you how long I've been in Karaoke). I only recall using it on the DK version of "Stairway to Heaven," which is God-awful slow.

Never noticed it too much on SC discs - I seem to recall a handful, but the newer Chartbuster discs are terrible for that, doesn't really matter the genre or even speed, if a line on the previous page ends while the next word starts almost immediately after on the next, page, it doesn't start drawing the next page until that word is already past it seems. Their old method of swiping was 100X better where it woul start erasing & drawing the next page while you are finishing out the last line or so.

Here's my guess:
SC is running some pretty ancient equipment and their policy has always been to issue a "clear screen" between every screen of graphics. This cleans up any aftifacts left on the screen opposed to the overlay method used be dk and others that only clear the screen when it's convenient. Apparently this is what cb is now doing as well.

While I agree completely, keep in mind that most of us work for a set fee in American style bars. Asian style bars, such a Toqer's, are different. The host gets paid a minimum, if at all, and makes money on tips, fee per song, and bribes. "Bribe to bump" would- at the very least- be a show killer for us, but is is both encouraged and expected in a standard Asian style bar. Not only that, but bribe to bump can even bid outbid by a bigger bribe.

Not my style at all, but my Sensei ( Okanawan born and raised) brought me to his karaoke bar ( for which I felt greatly honored. I was the only non-Asian in the place) and I saw it for myself.

Yup. This is why digital keychange came to be...

While I wouldn't change song speed/tempo, I have absolutely no problem using digital keychange ( however, I won't go more than 3 steps/ 1.5 octave). If it gives the singers more options, it gives me more singers- just good business. I'm also not ashamed to admit that as I have gotten older, I also take advantage of the function to lower key.

Actually the tempo changers on the newer karaoke software - at least Compuhost & soon Hoster doesn't affect the pitch at all, it's sped up/slowed down in the same key. Not sure how the other software tempo changers work in that regard.
