Wouldn't "the hardest song" be the one that is beyond the capabilities of an individual singer?

If this were the case then then would be a different "hardest song" for each defferent singer.

Master Blaster said it right -- it depends on whether your vocal range coincides with the range of the song. Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" can be pulled off with ease by many if not most good women singers but would be damn near impossible for a good male bass.

If range is the consideration for the toughness of a song it should be evaluated upon the range from low to high within the song. Queensryche's "Silent Lucidity", Aha's "Take On Me" are tough.

Songs that require fast enunciation such as The Auctioneer or One Week are tough as well and let me nominate Life is a Rock (but the radio rolled me) by Reunion...

Some songs have just small parts or sections that are hard to nail, for example, try saying, "b-b-b-bennie and the jets!"

The ending of Saturday Night's All Right for Fighting where it goes Saturday Saturday Saturday, Saturday...I have a hard time keeping the Saturdays in synch.

Also, the part of Turn to Stone by ELO that goes

Yes, I'm turnin' to stone 'cos you ain't comin' home.
Why you ain't comin' home if I'm turnin' to stone?
You've been gone for so long and I can't carry on,
yes, I'm turnin', I'm turnin', I'm turnin' to stone.

Whenever I sing that song it throws me for a loop.

Sorry Seattle, but all those songs are easy for me. Not that I sound great but they aren't that hard. I understand we are looking for songs that have continual "hardness" in them but the hard songs for me are that one or two notes.

Loverboy Turn Me Loose
Aerosmith Dream On
Boston More Than a Feeling

And even Joey Levine didn't do it in one take. I bought the 45 of that song as a kid and you can hear the splices if you know what to listen for.

One week is very fun to try and nail.

Another twist that we did to add the fun is no monitor for the singer and they had to go by memory, other people saw it from the tv behind them and when they sang the words wrong. BUZZ And also its fun when you hear someone sing a part that was way off.

Try Boston's "Peace of Mind." Saw a guy do this at a gig I visited one night while traveling - he hit every single note perfectly - truly amazing.

We have a fellow who can do that with Boston as well as Journey. Of course he regularly sings in bands....

Okay, here is one that should meet the requirements. How about The Loadout Song by Jackson Browne? The "why don't you stayyyyy" at the end is pretty high!

One I struggled with was John Denvers "Thank God I'm a Country Boy". Because even though I know the songs, my comfort level is to read the lyrics and not look out at the crowd. This goes so fast that if you read instead of knowing the song, your behind in a heartbeat.

Good call. That's three GREAT examples of songs with one or two hard notes.

For songs that are difficult all the way though, I gotta go with AC/DC. "Hells Bells" is relentless!

I'd be inclined to say that "Peace Of Mind" is one of the easier Boston songs! "More Than A Feeling" has got to be the toughest, and I'd put "Smokin'" in 2nd place.

While I do have a very good range, I can't sing as high as Steve Perry or as low as Barry White. So what I am wondering is why would anybody who takes singing even a little serious, purposely put themselves into a situation where they sing a song that they know is not one that they can sing?

Because they're drunk, as everyone at a karaoke show should be.

To humbly show others that you don't have to be great to sing karaoke, it's all for fun!

Nailed that one eh?

I have 3 voices, gravelly, plain if not too high or low, or falsetto. Some songs require a combo. I don't use the falsetto too often, just not all that comfortable. Now the Loadout Song? My falsetto isn't that great, on key but not that great but I can nail that part. One song that I have done the whole thing in falsetto that may be considered difficult by some is Love Hurts by Nazareth.

For me songs that require range can be very difficult, and I've butchered perhaps more than my fair share. On the other hand, fast enunciation has never really been a problem, and part of the reason I enjoy doing that kind of song is because the crowd thinks they're difficult. But you do have to know the song pretty well in advance. I've never done "One Week" and I'm sure I would suck at it because I don't know how it goes well enough to keep up. On the other hand, I can do "Istanbul, Not Constantinople," "Bust A Move," (rap generally moves pretty fast) and "It's the End of the World As We Know It" with no problem (provided the swipes keep up with the song; on some versions they don't).

It just depends on the singer. One song that I found surprisingly difficult was David Bowie's "Changes." Even though it doesn't require any high notes or anything, the rhythm of the song is really tricky.

Some of the older Ray Stevens songs like Mississippi Squirrel Revival, The Streak or Gitarzan are always fun, hard songs.

Fame by David Bowie is tough for me too.

Thought I knew it,
Instead I blew it

Candlebox's "You" is a tough song that took me longer than usual to learn because of all the little nuances and inflections he uses. It also has a high gravelly part in the middle that can be tough for someone like me that has a higher than normal range but not a stratospheric range like a Steve Perry or Bruce Dickinson.
