I generally nod and that's it.

I refuse to put 'sewer pipe' reverb on vocals, or put the vocals 47 feet in front of the backing tracks, or do anything else at a singers request to subject the rest of the room to crappy sound.

Funny how it's generally the mediocre (at best) singers that like to tell you how to run the board. The excellent singers and the crappy singers never do.

I'll throw it only in their monitor if they ask for more - I also won't put an over-effect the mains - unless it is supposed to be a part of the song. Although I do the same if they want more vocal or more music as well, it only goes in the monitors.

Just the hint of reverb on auto, but will enhance a......less accomplished..singer a touch, and flatten for rap.

My rotation is like Cue's- no insertions. Besides the obvious reward to singer who have been there longer, this eliminates "show jumpers", and having to do "on deck" calls, because everyone knows who they follow.

I'm a one man show.

I'll sing the sound check/icebreaker, and usually that's it. Having been at this more many years, I HAVE run into the occasional slow evening and kept myself in the rotation until we got 5 singers.

At this point, though I go to other karaoke shows, it's mostly just to watch and socialize with friends.

When it comes to echo -reverb it comes down to the personal prefference of the KJ and the Singers. Personally I don't like it, and most places that I have heard it make the singer usually worse by using too much. Not to say that some people dont do it right, but I believe that most of my singers are used to singing unamplified, and therefore are not used to reverb.

We all do our shows differently, and I don't do it with reverb. As I had 42 different singers on my last thursday shows nearly all of them regulars, I get plenty of singers that don't require reverb. I only have had a few singers ever that have asked for it and only one is a semi-regular. I do it for him but none of the other singers.

I also keep myself in the rotation.

It all just depends on if you get enough singers into the show to keep the venue happy. You are not going to please every singer, all you need is enough to make your show successful.

I also sign up my regulars automatically when they show up at the bar. I do that for people who have made it to over half of the last 30-40 shows, and always sing. That extra part may be why they are regulars.

I know it may upset some non-regular who may be the first time in the show but regulars are the bread and butter that makes the show work. Also I never sign up someone before they arrive. Usually most of them come to greet me and they like seeing that I had them signed up in the few seconds it takes to walk across the room.

Reverb is the last choice for a vocal effect, use a slight digital delay. Oh I forgot, VOCOPRO or K-mart systems don't offer digital delay.

Hmmm, yeah uh not!!!! Reverb is the first choice for most songs with a little delay as an accent.

I, personally, am an effects junkie. I love effects, but I also know that the wrong effects can make you sound terrible.

When I host I have a basic amount of effects on, and I adjust as the song/singer requires... Something like "Animals" but Nickelback doesn't need effects, but if the next song is Black Velvet, or Killing Me Softly, you better believe I'm cranking the delay on the effects so the singers voice resonates past the note... I love that lol My singers do too.

As for adding people in automatically... why would you do that? I bet the host thinks he's being helpful, but really, all that does is anger the other singers in the building... IMO the host should run on a first come first serve basis for the first round. But maybe that's just me.

And +1 to mckyj.... after a certain amount of singers, I don't need to sing anymore.

First come first serve the first round then I add new singers in throughout. Done this for 20 years. Usually a minimum 20 minute wait, they don't just walk in & get right up. We have a lot of swing shift & late night workers that come in, not necessarily bar hoppers. Not going to alienate them because they are working late. However get there too late - after I call no more slips (usually about an hour before close) - you will have to wait until tomorrow.

Interesting.....so if a singer comes in after starting your 2nd round you'd add them in the rotation say 6-10 singers behind the current singer?

Well again every singer should have some effect on every song, it just helps smooth out the voice, how much is the key - again you should not be able to 'hear' the effect, unless it is supposed to be there.

This is exactly right. Average singers are positive that with a little reverb (delay) they will be great. Why not help them out?

What has all this talk about rotations got to do with using reverb?

Nothing. It just the topics sort of get off topic at points.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

I use a light reverb on voices to start out with and adjust the level as the show progresses.

So nobody NEEDS effects on the voice. You can sing clean through a system and it'll sound good. But if you add some effects, again just enough that nobody can actually HEAR they've been applied, and the singer sounds GREAT, well, that's why I do it. I am a decent singer and I really HATE singing naked (without any effects at all). And if you ask anyone who sings professionally, they will respond that they NEVER sing without effects. Their effects will be better, of course, because they can afford the most expensive effects set-ups.

Fact is, most people who don't really know anything about boards or mixing sound or effects, have no CLUE at all why they sound better at my show than at someone else's (where I happen to know they don't use any effects at all). That's the way I like it. No need to go on and on, just say it's magic.

Brutality is a marginal singer singing dry. Really good singers can sing dry though it takes a lot more work. Really crummy, drunken screamers don't care anyway, and no matter what you give them for effects they sound like a drunk screamer.

BTW, "echo" or "reverb" are layman's terms for effects - and some people feel so incredibly clever when they ask for MORE REVERB or LOTS OF ECHO...oh good grief...You wanna sound like you're singing in a well? Not at my show you won't.

That's where the individual monitor mix comes into play. You can effect them there & leave the main mix in tact :)

I always have Reverb as well as other effects on standby. I adjust them differently for every single singer depending on their sound and vocal abilities. Probably 75 percent of the time there's at least a little reverb on the vocals but never to an extreme. I always strive to make it seem like your at each individual singers concert regardless of their vocal abilities

well maybe such dry preformances will induce more drinking.. :) ......must be entertaining some very dull peeps...
even a capella on a stage or in room with walls produces a voice with special effects.....unlike a dry mic
change effects for each singer?...... I prefer everyone on the same playing field, with only adjustments for the voice volume........though it seems most kjs I've seen, tend to lay the effects on thick when they sing, having one mic, only for their own personal use.....

I have my own personal mic, for two reasons I do this for a living and don't need germs passed to me and that the mic I use has been damaged to the point it is no longer trust worthy in hands of someone who doesn't know how to handle it. As my mic is used for making announcements it is completely dry. I use effects on the singers mics, and if I sing I hit the button and the same effects on the other mics is now applied to mine. If someone wants more or less or a different type of effect I will add it in, it just isn't a problem.

Yep yep! When a singer tells me more "echo" or to make them louder, or "Turn the music up" I mix their monitor for them and make the floor mix how i like. The last person to tell you how to mix is the talent! lol
