This one is really directed to folks like Thunder and others like me who have been at this real long time- I mean back to cassette and lyric sheet days- but I'll I'd like any info I can get from any source.

In my Easter Basket today were two of what appear to be BETA-MAX karaoke tapes found by a relative. My first and continuing thought was "HUH"? I've seen VHS karaoke, but NEVER on beta. I don't know what to make of them.

They seem to have original Nikkodo ( one of the originators of karaoke) labels. One has songs such as Summerwind and Beyond The Sea, but the other is labeled with some very hard to find folk by The Kingston Trio, Wheelers, Serendipity Singers, etc...

By brother has a working Beta-Max, but I'm kind of afraid to damage them if they're genuine.

Has anyone here ever heard of, or know a source for Beta-Max Karaoke that I could contact?

I'd borrow your brothers Beta deck and if you're that concerned about it.. watch the first 20 minutes of one of the hundreds of home recorded BETA tapes available on eBay to make sure the deck is in working order before sliding in your Easter bunny eggs into that 20 year old deck.

It sounds cool.. too bad there isn't an easy way to bounce those tracks down to MP3+G.. but I suppose you could convert 'em to DVD.

Thanks, Cheese. I really would like to do something with the Folk tape, at least.

My concern is less about the player than the tapes' condition. They look well kept, but if they dried out...

Right around the laserdisc explosion in the later 80's, there were also VHS karaoke. I don't know of any BetaMax tapes that were out but I would not say they weren't authentic. Is there a copyright date on the label anywhere?

Just go for it - put them in & hit play. If they are dried out or unplayable, you won't be able to do anything with them anyway. Probably were found in somebodys attic, basement or garage.
