I recently purchased a VCD collection for my local pub gig, where up until now we've been using a stand alone mic system (magicmic). I was under the impression the disks played in a normal DVD player, but I found to my surprise that they indeed do, except that the original vocal track plays also! I contaced the vendor who informed me I needed a "proper" karaoke player with an MPX feature to take out the vocals.

I've had a trawl round the web and notice not all these players state they have this feature. Some players say they have "Karaoke feature"... is this the same thing?

In case I can't find or afford a player with MPX, is there a workaround, i.e. is the vocal line delivered on a track that can be muted?

Any help or advice appreciated.

Pan the track to the right or the left. the vocals are on one or the other. that is how the machines remove the vocals. that is the way the multiplexes were made. now dvd's is a diffrent story it is on a separate track like spanish on a dvd.

I use this model for a secondary / backup at my bar for karaoke night.

Not all multiplex discs used the left/right side technique. Some were an underlying analog (that's what it displays when the multiples is off) track that when the multiplex is off, you hear the vocals - both channels, when the multiplex is on, you get the digital track removing the vocal track entirely.

I've got the dvds, and I can NOT remove the vocals

I have a dozen dvds, and can change the audio options, (language) and it will eliminate the vocals ir even change it to spanish on some of them..

I thought most all of them were the same

With all the DVD's and VCD's I have on my player I first turn on karaoke mode, and then can press the Audio button to switch between the different channels as output. This means that when I select left only it plays the left channel to both the left and right channels (effectively a mono sound).

The easiest way to tell if this works is that if you play back the disk you'll only hear the vocals on one side.

You 'might' be able to us the remove vocals feature to remove the vocals from the track, but it's not fool proof.

I LOVE MY O.F. DISCS , I play them on a JVC. 3 tray player (XL-MV33) under $400.00 American , plus most retailers will throw in 6 - 10 discs ( Sweet Georgia Brown) are the ones that came with my player. Good Luck !

OOPS! I got the URL's reversed above. Matt, check out the first one, nice unit, very similiar to a JVC/RSQ single tray only DVD. The second one, DVD player, has a karaoke button on the remote, but when I put a CD+G in it auto detects it. I only have 2 karaoke DVD's, just like a movie you have to go through the menu screen first, not very expedient during a show.

I have the O.F vcd and they are a major crowd pleaser. People dig seeing the original bands playing thier songs while they sing the lead vocal track. They work great with the jvc triple. The most requested ones are Lady marmalade and dancing queen.

I revisted my remote control last night and realised I could indeed mono the left and right tracks, and the vocal line does indeed appear on one side only.

Good result. Thanks again. Now all I have to do is rehearse them...

My dumb, I was looking, trying to figure out what manufacture OF was...

FYI Original Footage discs are vcd's of live performances by the original artists with a TRUE vocal cancel , so you can watch the video as you sing and your voice appears to come from the singers mouth , very popular in my shows as well !!!

If you do a song search in the left column towards the top of this page, you'll find them there.I'm not sure what State you live in , but in Southern California I get them from a store that specializes in karaoke music and equipment called Sing Along Center. you may find them at other online karaoke sites as well , but keep in mind that you'll need a VCD player to play them on such as the JVC units- THESE WILL NOT PLAY ON A CDG PLAYER good luck!

FYI - they should play in most DVD players (some of the early ones did not, especially if they were the higher end units).

The RSQ/JVC 333 plays VCDs just fine as KJ Deendogg mentioned.
