We've seen American Idol, and it sounds like ABC is doing a show, but suppose you, the KJ, were allowed to create your own made-for-tv karaoke show. How would you run it? How would you select singers for it? What kind of show would you want to have? Judges? No judges? Variety of songs? Number of songs? Live backing band? Skill level of singers? How would you do it?

I'd probably go with judges and tell them the only criteria they are looking at is quality of voice. In fact I would have the judges faced backwards as in The Voice for the entire contest.
No wait a minute I got a better idea. The judges are in a separate room where they can only hear the performer.

I'd hire Chuck Barris as master of ceremonies and have a panel of drunk celebrity judges.

or,

I'd make it into a sitcom following the crazy life of a wise-cracking psychopathic karaoke host and his patrons.

Can we get JP Morgan and Soupy Sales to be 2 of the Judges?

I would portray Karaoke as it truly is, and the same way I run my show: No Contests, No Divas, Just A Good Time!

Earthling actually has the right slant. I wouldn't make it a variety show, but maybe a comedy / drama or maybe even a "docu-real life-comedy" revolving around the nights at a karaoke club, or several clubs.

Make hard core karaoke followers the "stars" and follow their actions, and those around them. This in addition to showing the performances.

IMHO, we definitely do NOT need another diva filled Idol, Voice, Lyrics, Simon Cowell's new deal, etc.... These formats are quickly reaching burnout stage.
