I don't think people are being rude in bringing their own backing music and you shouldn't need to feel insulted by it. I don't think it is a reflection of the sufficiency of your library. It's more a case of people wanting to sing a particular song and knowing they will get the version that they like. I have many backing tracks that, as far as I know, are not available as karaoke tracks, but they are songs I really enjoy singing. Here's an example... http://karaokescene.com/ss/listen.php?id=89402 If a KJ won't play my disk, then I will choose a song from the book. In fact, at a new venue, I will always sing at least one song from the KJ's library before asking if my disk can be played. There are just some songs I like to sing that I will not choose from a book, because I have not heard a karaoke version of them that I like. No, I don't think it is being rude to make a simple request that will enable me to sing a song of preference. By the way, my disks are standard CD, not CDG... no lyrics, no logos displayed = no hassle for KJ.

Merle Haggard - Reasons to Quit, Rolling Stones - Dead Flowers, which you said previously you have both, but many country oriented shows do not have Dead Flowers. John Prine - Please Don't Bury Me; Spanish Pipedream; Grandpa Was A Carpenter; and a few others off that one and only John Prine CD if I'm in a bar with some old hippies who know and love John Prine. Homemade, I now have The Byrds - I Am A Pilgrim; You're Still On My Mind. A lot of people have a bluegrass version of I Am A pilgrim which is at least twice as fast as the The Byrds. Homemade, I now have New Riders Of The Purple Sage - Dim Lights, Thick Smoke. Which has been covered by a lot of people but never made into a karaoke version.

Just turn off the auto play.
Only burned discs I will play is local bands/musicians using their own written material. Are you refusing flash drives now too? They are not much different than a burned disc. Personally, I'll play whatever as a service to the customer but will tell them I've alredy got that version if I do. It's fairly common for someone to bring a disc because my venue caters to those who take their singing seriously (divas and prima donnas) but still like to drink and have a good time. Some of the songs that I like to sing but often the KJ does not have: Humble Pie - 30 Days In The Hole Pulp - Common People (I also have a homemade of the Shatner version I do with a friend) Audioslave - Set It Off Peter Frampton - Do You Feel Like I Do Black Sabbath - Fairies Wear Boots Toto Colelo - I Eat Cannibals Some of my Homemade: The Eagles - Those Shoes Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea Monster Magnet - There's No Way Out Of Here Hayseed Dixe - I Believe In A Thing Called Love

Just let me know if there are any songs that you might want to sing so that I can get them ahead of time if they are available. Thank you for the consideration. I'll keep that in mind if I ever plan a visit over to CT.

Disc that are "homemade" using their own music and lyrics (with the lyrics as on a true Karaoke file) I don't have as problem with at all and in fact encourage them.
Someone bringing in a file with an instrumental of a song and then getting up to sing it isn't going to happen at one of my karaoke shows. This is out of a matter of fairness I am not going to let some wanna'be rapper get up and do a 10 minute rap to his "beats" so I will not allow Suzie Homemaker to get up and do her 3 minute Lita Ford song to a file that doesn't display the lyrics. Spend the time and put the lyrics on with the file and I am more than happy to play it.
If you want to perform the song to a file without the displayed lyrics I can direct you to one of the "Open Mic" nights. Same thing if you want to bring your guitar in and sing.

Moody Blues, there are over 20 titles for karaoke, most venues will have Nights In White Satin and that's about it.
Bobby Vee, there are over a dozen titles, most venues might have Take Good Care Of My Baby. If they have DK.
Gene Pitney, again over 20 titles. You may be able to find Town Without Pity, but most KJ's have no clue who he is.
I grew up with these singers and love their music. One of the things that got me collecting discs to begin with was chasing down every song by these artists. Rather than hauling around a couple of dozen original discs (most of which are out of print and no longer available), I've made up artist discs and take those with me. My Moody Blues disc even lists the Mfr., Disc and track of the original on the label so there's no mistake where the song came from.

You're right! I like to sing "For My Lady" and "The Story In Your Eyes" and "Town Without Pity" almost nobody has those.

Like stated I only had one flash drive handed to me a couple years ago so I do not believe that will be an issue. I guess it will be a play it by ear thing on that. The burned disc thing is more for the regs that come in. I've already picked up several songs that some of my regs sing that they had burnt discs for. I've allowed this on occasion, however bringing in an instrument won't happen - a harmonica is the only exception since there is no set up required. On VERY RARE occasions, i've allowed accapella songs, but it has to be some special occasion for that.

But not a lot of call for him either - my Dad happens to sing a couple when he comes out once in a blue moon.

I have, 11 MB titles in either SC, Pioneer or Legends brands 13 Bobby Vee titles most of them on Zoom P024 which pretty much sucks (which is why I didn't purchase but a few Zoom disc) but also have some songs on SC, CB, SAV, Legends and Pioneer. And "Take Good Care Of My Baby" is on CB, SC, Legends, Pioneer and MM as well as DK I have 5 versions of it. 13 Gene Pitney titles on SC, Legends, MM, and SAV. Black Sabbath "Fairies Wear Boots" I only have it on Radio Starz but have many others on SC and Dangerous. Audioslave, you are out of luck only have two songs Cochise and Like A Stone on three different brands CB, PHM and MM.

the only ones i refuse are home burns, and for one reason only. i have some that bring in discs full of songs i KNOW they got from a torrent site. i will not support piracy in any way, but that leaves me in a dilema, if i refuse to play their home burns, but not someone elses, now it gets hairy. i refuse home burns just to stay consistant from one singer to the next with how i lay down the rules as opposed to "you'rs i will play, but yours....shove 'em up your azz." original discs....no problem. as for, is it you? don't get offended, yeah odds are the SGB version of whatever sounds like some kid with a casio keyboard, but if that what they are used to feom the cheap azz, home stereo, don't give a $hit hosts with the nice short 6 singer rotation, that is what they will feel most comfortable with no matter how much better manu X,Y or Z did it. so i would just ride it.

As we know, Karaoke roughly translates to "empty orchestra", which basically means 'no instruments'. Yes, totally with you in regards to instruments Lonman.

Well folks, I still have a disc player in my rack, and use it on occasion for a singer who brings their own disk. I know my library isn't all inclusive, and I don't have a lot of obscure things someone might like to sing.
That's not a problem. Further, if i do happen to have the song and version they like, I'll just populate in the computer WITHOUT TELLING THEM, until after they've sang and are happy. Then I'll hand there disc back and say, "Hey, by the way, I already had that song, and its now in your history for the next time you come back."
First of all, they were happy that I would play their disc, and now they are happy, I'm keeping their history for them for THE NEXT TIME.
I don't know how you all do it, but my job is to make smiles, not frowns, and keep people coming back to the bar, not let my ego get in the way of other's fun.
