I have never had anyone bring in a flash drive but I do not think I would use it. Why take a chance of picking up a virus? Just my 2 cents worth. If you turn off "Autoplay" disks and flash drives, which you should do anyway, there is no risk to speak of.

sorry your night was a major PITA...charging to sing would be a huge no-no here...We do not play customers discs unless originals and would not accept a thumbdrive due to legalities...but the final strike was a doosie

This wasn't a lousy Karaoke night, but here's one that I just can't help but laugh about.....
Sunday night, the place where I usually go for Karaoke, didn't have it. The KJ had cancelled the show due to the rain. I went back home to see if I could find some other place to go, and then I was trolling around the areas, looking for a place to go. I decided to go back to a place that I hadn't been to in about 2 years.
I go into the place at about 9:30 PM, and it was fairly quiet there. There were signs in the place that were advertising the Karaoke to start at 10 PM. I didn't see any sign of a KJ setting up. I asked the "Alchohol Intake Coordinator" (Bartender) if the show was cancelled due to the bad weather, and he said that there will be a show. Around 10 PM, the KJ showed up, and started to set up. After it looked like he had finished setting up, I approached him and asked if he could play my discs. He explained that he was set up on a Laptop, and couldn't play discs. I then asked him if he would/could accept the use of my Flashdrive. He said that he wasn't sure what he would require to play from it (honest enough answer).
The KJ then told me that he has over 120K songs, and he just updated his library last month, so he should have everything current. OK.... I decided to stay and see how the show goes. The first song that I requested was "Knee Deep" (The Zac Brown Band). He took my selection, and then came back to me a few minutes later. He said that he didn't have that song, and then asked me for my Flash Drive. He said that since he wasn't ready to start the show yet, he would see if he could play from my Flashdrive. After he plugged it in, he said that he could play from it. GREAT!!! Now I can use my Flashdrive here.
It's now 11 PM, and the KJ still hasn't started the show. Apparantly, he could not get the big screen (that he was hooked up to via his Laptop) to display anything. He checked the connections, and the Owner even came over to try and figure it out. Finally, the KJ said that it appeared there was a problem with his Laptop's connection to the screen, and he had to switch to his spare. After another 15 minutes of booting up, he got his connection to the big screen monitor. The KJ told me that he wouldn't be able to reload my song from the flashdrive, because it took him too long to do it before on the 1st Laptop. OK... still honest enough explanation. I just took a quick look at my discs, and jotted down about 6 songs that I figured I might sing, and also wrote down which Manu preferences I had for some of them.
While still waiting for the show to start (before the Monitor problem), someone who was sitting near me, had recognized me, and asked me to sing "Dentist" (from Little Shop of Horrors). I told him that I would after the other song that I had handed up. I added that song to the list that I had given to the KJ, with the specification of it being on anything BUT SC. I told him that it should be on Pocket Songs and Music Maestro as well. He came back to me saying that the ONLY version he had for "Dentist" was on SC. I told him to scratch that song from the list, because I sang that version once, and the timing is off for that song. There was a third song on my list that he didn't have either.... "Show Them to Me" (Rodney Carrington), which is only on a ChartBusters disc.
Here comes the laughable part now... From boasting that he had everything I could possibly want to sing, he didn't have several songs. Out of 7 or 8 songs that I asked the KJ for, he didn't have 3 of them (I count "Dentist" as one of those 3, because it wasn't on a version that I can sing from). 120K songs, and I hand up 8, and he didn't have 3.... Proportionall to what I handed him, that's a lot.

Had the same thing happen when we checked out the show next door to us once. Huge books but nothing more current than when they bought the hard drive years ago.

Squeezing people dry? This is the equivalent of less than a quarter in 1970. I don't think it qualifies. I think it's a great idea. A dollar is nothing. Someone who isn't drinking should be happy to pay, and someone who is drinking should pay a dollar to make someone put up with their vocal stylings. And since an avg night, no 1 person is going to sing more than 3-4 songs, I don't think it's a huge issue. Definitely not squeezing them out of anything. That's less than an avg house drink costs in most places. I agree with this. Try renting a karaoke room? I've been playing around with the idea of charging to unlock a song on my HD but haven't as of yet.

I get that alot, people looking at my 'small' 2" book and finding things the guy down the street with 100K+ songs in his 5" (exaggeration) binder doesn't have at all. But this would be the last place i'd actually use a flashdrive at, because if they don't have it now, i'm betting that next time you come in (IF) that they will have it then. Those are the shows that shouldn't be supported.

Well, we did have non-stop rain in NY all day on Sunday, and there were some areas that made the News, reporting flooding. A lot of people weren't going out because of that.

If we got rain here right now, would probably have to cancel. Would be an empty room (everybody would be out dancing in it).

In over twenty years, I've never canceled a show because of rain. (Snow/ice maybe, but not rain). Even on rainy nights the crowd still comes out.
On a second point, my road case/coffin is two rack sizes wide. My computer on the left and the powered mixer on the right. Both are very close together. I can not play customers disks because the disk drive will only open about 1" so I can't insert a disk. Also, I won't chance a thumb or flash drive in my computer.
Not being able to play customers disks has not really affected my show at all. If I don't have what they want, I get it off SBI by the next show.
My books list the manufacturers codes but not the full disk numbers.

I de-duped my book but I have a manu for each song. I set fasttracks to pick a specific manu for each song.
