You do realize that the very forum software here is open source and free? There's nothing inherently wrong with open source. You can write your own kiosk software too and save money. You can buy the $25 model or the $169 model that you can use as many satellites as you want. Or you can keep spending $300 a year on books and repairs and binders. My point is that you can save money and sometimes you have to spend a little to save a lot. It's just not instant.

I was running Xubuntu before I decided to go back to windows xp due to there not being a decent ripping program. My show computer doesn't have a cdg capable drive so I had to return to XP. Besides that, Xubuntu was hit or miss whether it would boot up or not. XP boots all the time.

i have the opposite problem. Ubuntu boots every time, in less than 10 seconds from pushing the power button and never a single lockup or crash. Windows costs hundreds to do the same thing that Ubuntu does for free. sorry, didn't mean to derail this so bad.

Since in over two years of hosting, I've only been approached with a disc one time and one time only, someone trying to sabotage my business by spreading the word to 30 other singers in the venue who don't bring discs, isn't going to be very successful.
It's not the highest thing on my list, I asked a Canadian host if he ever plays discs, he said no one has ever approached him about it. I guess it depends where you are.
I'll probably have the capability to do it at some point, right now though, not feeling the need. If I had a few people bringing discs, I'm sure I would feel motivated.

Lonnie,
I am not sure what it is but even way back when I had only a handful of people at all shows combined that ever had me play from their disc over a long period of time when I was totally disc based. In the past five years I have only had two people request that I play from their disc and voth of them I already had the song they wanted (from the same disc they had) in my system so it really doesn't affect all areas the same.
Honestly I have had a lot more want me to play from Thumb Drives and Memory cards in the last two years than I ever had bring me their CDG disc.
I also have had three or four request to play cassette tapes over the past 20 years, do you full service guys accomodate these as well?

maybe it's a regional thing, like country is strong, or dying in a particular area.

Right on Mr Lonman! If I was in your area, what reason would I have to go to any other venue other than yours? When I already know that you would play my music of choice, I'd have no reason to go anywhere else on the off-chance that they might.

Perhaps. Since I have all the business I can handle now (turned down a number of gigs already) and that I will be moving in the next year, not at the top of my to do list. Again, I'm not exaggerating. Only one request and he was very nice about it and stayed all night and sang a number of songs from my library.

I did up until about 3 years ago when my tape player quit working. Plugged into the Pioneer player aux input it was able to utilize the key changer as well. Although I did have sporadic requests from tapes over the years, this was one piece of equipment that wasn't worth replacing. I would however if I got more people asking about being able to play tapes but I don't see that happening. I do have a player at home I could bring in if someone emails me ahead of time they'd like to play a tape.

Right on Mr Lonman! If I was in your area, what reason would I have to go to any other venue other than yours? Downfalls are usually the wait times. On an avg night it's usually an hour between songs minimum which some look at as they don't get to sing as much so they don't come in or come in and see the long list and leave. Those that know - come & stay. Plus if you are not a smoker, we are tribal so smoking is allowed in our bar still - which does keep some people away unfortunately.

Those that know - come & stay. A show I used to regularly attend would often have a 2 - 3 hr wait time... would sometimes get in 3 songs if there from the start (6 hr gig), but regardless would always be there till the 1 am close due to the quality of the venue, the gig and the audience/singers. Quote: Plus if you are not a smoker, we are tribal so smoking is allowed in our bar still - which does keep some people away unfortunately. Ahhhggggh! That might do it! Used to be there was no choice... every bar had smokers. Now, one does have the choice to avoid the bars where smoking is allowed. And my preference would be where there is no smoking. However, if it came down to a choice of being able to sing the songs I want to in a smoky bar or only being able to sing the songs the KJ wanted me to in a smoke-free bar, I guess I'd either suck it up and face the smoke, or stay home! Little off subject but I play in the only bar (smoking only allowed in casinos, hot debate in our state) in the state of Iowa that you can smoke in. It has two rooms, I play in the smoking room. Some people will stay in the other room till it's their turn and then they come in. I have noticed even though the owner has a great ventilation system (plays havoc with my fog) that my stuff smells like cigarettes the next time I open my trailer.

Lonnie, If I come out to Washington and e-mail you ahead of time will you setup a 4 track reel to reel for me so I can sing to some of my old band recordings. The music really wasn't all that well done, but the personalities were great!
