I just acquired about 120 Northstar Music karaoke CD+G's.

I've listened to a few tracks and the quality seems slightly better than average. For reference, I consider Sweet Georgia Brown to be average and most of NuTech to be garbage.

I compared the Northstar version of Sour Girl by the Stone Temple Pilots to both NuTech and Music Maestro's versions. I found it to be much better than both with clear guitar and even the backing orchestra tracks sound like the original.

Anyone else use these?

Another defunct label that didn't pay for their licensing. They are the same company as StarDisc, I beleive.

Danny... can you substantiate your statement about their licensing?

Having listened to the tracks, I don't believe that they are from the same source as StarDisc. They sound different with the Northstar tracks being superior in my opinion.

Yes, Northstar is Star Disc....

OMG! Are you going to have to throw them all away now?

Only about as much as you can substantiate that CB really bought SGB....

(same difference, I wouldn't worry about it.)

I've got about 50 of them. I use them only if I haven't got a requested track on any other label.

Actually, I think SGB's tracks are probably better recorded, even if the arrangement is similar, but Star Disc was - again, IMHO, much worse- and have all been pulled.

They were, like Stellar, generic karaoke tracks. The selling point- like Stellar- was quick output of new songs.

Singable, but no great shakes.

I dunno Joe, I have always like PHM's quality... Albeit their "Nashville Edition" sounds a lot like CB....

I detest StarDisc and NorthStar. It may just be their country, but I find there are frequent "Music Maestro Moments" where the KJ puts on the track and I try to sing, thinking "what the heck is THAT!?!"

I never knowingly put in a song that is StarDisc, Northstar, or Music Maestro. And if it is a book with no manufacturer info, I try to find out what version it is if I am seeing MM or SD come up as people sing.

I have no such reaction with SGB. Since I know my lyrics in almost all cases, I don't have any problem with them as musically they are much better than MM or SD.

I've only bought one Northstar disc and it sucked so bad that I haven't risked buying another.

We all discuss different labels, and we all seem to agree that even some of the bottom end labels have a couple of good tracks.

However, and of course this is just my own humble opinion- I have yet to hear even one useable track from Idol Makers. I think their sound man is tone deaf...

I might as well have taken my money and lit it on fire when I bought those. Terrible!

Huh, that is a funny statement! I only have one Idol Maker disc, but EVERY track is an exact copy of Sweet Georgia Brown/All Hits tracks, now I cannot speak for the rest of the IM series but I will guess that most of the tracks are also the same as they have nearly identical track listings between the two.
Interesting you can hear it on another brand that copies the music as a bad track, but not on the SGB tracks themself.

It may be because the Idol Makers are extremely inferior copies. It would be like ripping SGB at 32kbps and then burning them to disc.

Not the tracks I heard, there was no distinguishable differences in the music quality. Sounded like a direct digital transfer.

Lon, I'm not sure if they are copies or not- the graphics come up differently. But let's say they ARE copies- that doesn't mean that the recorded copies were mixed well, or that the equipment was up to par, or that the sound man had a clue.

This is the same reason downloads aren't considered "original". You, with your knowledge, can take a download and make it sound great, while KJ Duh takes the same download and destroys it.

The music tracks between the Idol Maker & the same music tracks from Sweet Georgia Brown/All Hits (again I only have 1 disc from IM to compare to) were identical - no difference in mixing, eq'ing, effecting, compressing or anything else.
