Maybe no one will watch because they are all out singing.....
Just read that a Maroon 5 member has pitched a show that will be like Cheers but take place in a karaoke bar. Now that might be a boost.

hmm....there are not many karaoke night here on Fridays. In Pittsburgh Karaoke is Sunday to Thursday. Friday and Saturdays are for Bands and DJ's.
The concept of the show just seems terrible.

As a person who likes to go out to Karaoke (for over 10 years now), I am not interested in watching that show.... Unless there is someone in it that I know. There-in is where my interest in the show would lie. Otherwise, I have no desire to watch a show of total strangers singing Karaoke. I'd rather be out there at Karaoke myself (even if it meant singing in front of a bunch of total strangers).

If the people on those clips were some kind of "winner" from any regional contest..... There are places with MORE singers in a single evening better than any of those in the clips....
They really have to put forth an effort to find people that are that bad....
A sad state of affairs....

I watched the clip. It looks to me like they are actually trying to make karaoke look bad.
Those are the semi-finalists?! That makes it appear as though the section of the country they scoured with their qualifying contests has no talent to offer. If that's truly the way it is, I feel for those of you who host there. I would quit if had to listen to that and worse every night.
I'm offended that this is the image that ABC wants to portray for karaoke.

First, my own very singular and personal opinion is that any show that makes karaoke a competion defies the whole concept of karaoke- the average person out having fun, becoming a 5 minute star, and enjoying others doing the same. A pox on it. That aside, I'm thinking maybe the whole singing/talent competition for TV concept is getting a bit burned out. American Idol, X-Factor, The Voice, America's Got Talent ( I actually like this one), The new Karaoke show, So You Think You Can Dance, Dancing With The Stars, blah blah blah... I think you can only dilute the audience base so far...

They had a try-out at a casino near us but I didn't hear about it until after it happened. But I would be interested to watch just in case any familiar faces popped up. We have a few semi-regulars who frequent the casinos for the gong show karaoke prizes, etc. However that channel usually doesn't come in way out here a whole 60 whopping miles away so I'm off the hook.

Anything - and I mean ANYTHING - designed originally for fun is going to eventually become into a competition. It's human nature to WANT to compete so they do. Karaoke is no different. Competitions are only for those who want to do it, and as long as there is a demand for it (and there is), karaoke is no different than say a golf tourny or a quilting contest or 'air' guitar or video game contests or ????? what have you - people LIKE to compete and will seek those competitions - as very well evident by all the competion reality shows that exist and more happening every day.

Contests cheapening the business? Nah. Again it's not for everyone. Don't like them? Don't do them! It would only really affect the company that runs it - either positively or negatively. Since most of the contests i've seen (no not participated, just witnessed) seemed like they were ficed from the start, this is where the bad rap comes from, however again, it should only apply to the company that put it on, not the entire industry & I do not believe it does. People like to compete. When we ran contests regularly, they were ALWAYS the busiest nights of the week!

It's not the contest that diminishes karaoke...it's the editing.

Ok, 75 minutes, and they're through the singers, and they're going to pick the ones to continue. Simon bad mouths karaoke, but in 75 minutes, I just saw more talent and personality, than I saw in all the American Idol shows put together. And we're talking a draw from a tiny, tiny fraction of what A.I. had to draw from. I say tonight's show was positive for karaoke, with only one draw back........as a siinger, I now feel like I suck..... ps......Friday night, I'm home watching TV......guess my life sucks too.......tried downing a whole bottle of aspirin, but after the first two......I felt much better......guess I'll see you tomorrow......

Gotta agree with ya Johnny, there was more talent there than on Idol in the short time.
I thought the lady that moved on was great. Still think the young man should have won over the MUSIC teacher just because his voice cracked a little on the very last note of the song.
One thing I didn't agree on was stage performance. How many great professionals have no stage performance they just stand behind the mike and belt out a great song. Look at Roy Orbison he never moved except his hands and mouth and was a great singer. Why does one have to jump, dance, etc. to have great stage performance?

I agree with you LW.....besides, it takes every bit of oxygen, my heart & lungs can muster up, just to sing for me....if I moved even a little, you'd just hear heavy panting(which I reserve for the random women I call on the phone.... ), in tune with the music, though... My eyes are always fixed on the monitor, since I have CRS, and can't remember the full lyrics to a single song.......

Well, I put on a tin foil hat, held on to the antenna and was able to get that channel without too much breaking up. Thought the judges were sort of annoying and it wasn't that well produced but the singing talent made it worth watching.
Thought the kid made a true karaoke type statement when he mentioned that his voice had cracked but maybe his enthusiasm would carry him through. How many times have we had a good singer perplexed that the person who just mangled a song but put their all into it gets more crowd response than they do? He understood the essence of karaoke.

C.R.S. is definitely a crippling condition as it progresses... and it only worsens with age.
The only side-effect of CRS is that you can (as time goes on) detect the very slight increase in the gravitational pull of the planet each year. The youngsters without CRS don't have the benefit of such acute senses...
I notice the gravitational increase whenever I lift anything heavy....
